Hi!

I am wondering if it is possible to connect Central Station 60215 to a Wifi router using the commonly available USB Wifi network adapters, rather than using the ethernet cable. Like most people on this forum, my router is a bit far from where I have my central station and the model train layout.

Appreciate responses/ insights from other forum members who have had a similar issue. Thanks a bunch in advance!

Not too sure about the wifi USB adapter but what I did is just plug a wifi to Ethernet bridge into it so I can get my cs2 onto my wifi network.

Hi Rajnish,

I had a similar problem with the router being some distance away. To combat this problem, I obtained a D-Link wi-fi 'bridge'which also acted as a booster for the home network. Another alternative was the D-Link router I have also connects via the household power circuit so that there was a 'hard-wire'connection available as well.

Unfortunately, USB does not appear to be an option but do shop around for a bridge connection as I have found it quite reliable.

Regards,

Michael.

A WiFi network Adapter - Yes, but not a USB device , still utilise the RJ45 connection
I use a NetGear WNCE3001
(The USB port might be used for power, but I don't know the specs for the CS2 so prefer to power separately)

As far as I know the CS has not driver support for the direct USB device types, and wont PnP
If someone knows a model/make that is inherently supported please do tell.
Peter

As far as I know, the CS2 USB can support memory & input devices - like USB sticks & mouse...

Since the OS is a Gentoo Linux variant, I suppose there is no PnP support for "any" stuff as we are used to with Win (and possibly Mac too)...
I would actually send that question to the Märklin support/service and ask them what kind of devices are supported on the CS USB port...

Might clear any doubts up, and maybe give them some ideas about future devices to support via USB.

For now, the Ethernet port is the only network communication supported - especially since you can only set IP & CAN gateway address on the Ethernet interface.
I don't think that will change, and I think it would not make any use either, since making the CAN gateway on the USB port as a selectable alternative is way too complicated to be worthwhile regarding software maintenance - it would just add more error opportunities and unstability to the CS2 unit software.

I think they should not even try to go down that USB "plug'n'play" route at all for networking, but keep all CS2 networking to the Ethernet port and let users decide how they want to use it.
The hardware is designed by Kontron for a dedicated purpose, and as with all "embedded" devices - it is not as "general" in design as a normal PC, especially not regarding USB...
Believe me, I've worked with embedded devices for years...

Better to get a cheap box to connect to the CS2 Ethernet port, I myself have the CS2 connected to a "PowerLan" via the electricity cables, and at the other end another "PowerLan" plugged into the wireless router at home... Works great...

I just use my old Netgear router for my Märklin Network in the garage. If I want to update the software on my CS2 I just take it inside the house and plug it into the modem/router.

I tried with a NETGEAR USB Wi-Fi and it does not work with CS2. The CS2 does not have the drivers to use this items.

When I had a CS2 I used a D-Link DWL-G810. This plugged in to the LAN port and the D-link item is a Wi-fi device and became part of the network.

I had the train room in one place and the Router in anther room. Worked perfectly. I could even control the trains from the Office.

Hi! Thank you so much everyone for your quick responses. I will be buying a Wifi Bridge to connect my CS2 to the router :)

Cheers,

Rajnish

I've got a NetGear WNDR4000 WiFi/Router in the computer room/office, and a WN2500RP "Wireless extender" which I actually use as a wired access point downstairs.
A few days ago I updated my CS2 from the WN2500RP downstairs, and everything went perfectly.
I still need a cable from the CS2 to the WN2500RP, but I don't need one long enough to go upstairs.

I intend to start a layout in the attic, so this means I won't need to drill holes in the walls or floor.
Cheers,
Damon
