I found some nice z sized stacking plastic boxes at the local office max and made custom inserts to give a decent home to my
trains that came without the original boxes. I made an insert running longways for the longer cars.

I use something similar that I got from the supermarket to store my locos that don't have a box. I use the soft foam insert packaging that I got out of some server boxes that we had delivered at work, and cut an insert for the loco. Works quite well.

A neat idea. I'm sure we've all got at least a few locos and wagons without boxes. You do have to be careful about some foams - I've seen the results of leaving trains lying in some types of foam. They bubble the paintwork.

Great idea to post these hgk...ThumpUp

I would love to see more portable systems for keeping and sorting train cars, especially for HO.
The "train safe" system are nice for ready to roll consists, but something more affordable for a whole collection would be nice to see.

At present I am using two of my drawing drawers (large wide flat drawers for technical drawings used by architects, artists and city maps/design departments)
for my unboxed items, the DR Piko stuff and various unboxed Marklin cars.

Portable flat boxes like the above for HO would be excellent, but I have not seen any sellers of such a thing in my area.
I love the cardboard Marklin boxes, but honestly, putting them in and out of the boxes can be tiring, and if I don't use tissue paper to protect them, I notice that roofs can show signs of wear from rubbing on the boxes.
