I believe the Viessmann semaphore signals (IE. 4500) need a postive output from the decoder. I know the Viessmann and Marklin decoders have this, but I am not sure about the Switchpilot.

Does somebody know?

Thanks,
Steven Delhaas

Hi,

The switchPilot output is indeed a "negative pulse" (+20V->0).
But the 4500 works in AC or DC, so you can use it with the SP.

Switchpilot from ESU is an magnetswitch decoder.

DCC = Digital Command Control

... but for instance 4502 have diodes between the two coils, and electronic devices may have problems using the SwitchPilot as well. It's easier to stick with Märklin, Viessmann or Uhlenbrock in these matters IMHO.

Yes, you are right. I can't understand why ESU made an negative pulse output, that makes its switchPilot not compatible with others manufacturers.
Nevertheless, SP is interesting, from a pecuniary point of view, for driving signals lights for instance, for it gives the possibility to choose between k83 behavior, or k84 behavior (=bistable), for the same price as a k83. (or to choose driving servo-motors)

Well,
we are Märklin biased, right? I think that in US / DCC ... have chosen diffrently. At least Lenz made the other choice as well.

There are more polarity problems in our world, whenever there comes to a common ground of LEDs, as in signals. I recall right now, the "Steurwagen" from Märklin, with direction sensistive LED lightning. I tried to make a digital conversion, and it was not possible with normal function decoders, unless doing some surgery on the PCB. Sigh.

Competiion is normally a good thing, but not always.
