Any help/input much appreciated.

Hi Patrik, Thanks for the link. Yes, I've looked at those on e-bay, have you got those display cases, what is the quality of them like. The front is Plexiglas, how robust is that in operation. Ian.

Probably won't be until 2013 as we have only just given the "go ahead" on our new home here..... takes approx 8-9 months from now until we can (finally) live in the new house

Hi Ian, Mehmet knows a thing or two about display cases but it's just a tad depressing looking at all his gorgeous models - Jeremy. |

Hi Jeremy, Yes, I know what you mean, fantastic collection. I'm sure mehmet is fortunate enough to have a cabinet maker friend, so his display cases are all hand made. Ian.

There is always the option of building your own. The cost would be less.

Ian, The sliding fronts are pretty flexible, which means you can easily take them out by lifting at the bottom, they are okay for me,keeping trains away from the dust. I asked my wife if i could buy another big one,the answer was NO! And,as a married man,i will need to obey orders, you will understand. Cheers, Paul. |

Ian,
The product from Vitrinenschmidt comes assembled, with the plexiglass sheets as separate items, you can easily slide them in,top first. The plexiglass sheets have a red colored protection layer which you can easily remove. Also there is a small sachet with screws and hooks. The people from Vitrinenschmidt i found very friendly and cooperative. In Holland, delivery is by postal van from Germany, you need to ask what is costs to get them in the U.K. I purchased mine via Ebay.de,and found that there is room to negotiate on productprice and despatch costs, just asking the question is costing you nothing. Make sure you select the proper version,if you want prefab machined track, pick the proper version or ask them about it,English is no problem. If you need help, please let me know.
Paul.

Hi Ian I have a wall display case made by a Norwegian, see http://www.mamut.net/vitriner/, in Norwegian only He makes them of wood (pine (furu), beech (bøk) or oak (eik), different prices), with glas shelves and doors. This is a poor photo of mine, without the sliding doors: His prices are in NOK. I do not know if he ships abroad. |
Best regards Svein, Norway grumpy old sod

I have four of the 5' cases from www.customdisplaycases.com, and they are NICE! I found the price very fair, and the thinner nature of acrylic means more trains per case than with wood Freight to the UK may kill you though |

Hi Ian, Just noticed this topic. Now I know Train Safe is not cheap but surely the best cause you can run the trains directly out of them onto the layout. However if it's for your older models that you don't intend to run, then get the economy tubes without powered rails, it would make a nice uniform display , and you can still move them as a unit to the layout and roll them out occasionally I favour this over a large fixed cabinet where you have to handle each piece individually. But if its for just "Display Only" then the best wooden cabinet, with rail grooves in it, as per Big Boy Cases, and a glass front would have to be made by an expert like your self with a few wood good working tools including a router PS; most important, the wooden shelves, and structure, MUST, be dry, and sealed with Varnish or paint, otherwise the moisture release into a closed area will play havock with your models |

Just got my first case from the address below. http://www.vitrinenschmidt.de/Given the price point, these are pretty good. It shipped perfectly and the nice thing is there are a large number of size combinations available. This is useful for those tricky wall areas. I will order another soon to relieve layout over crowding.
