The guys on the Italian Marklinfan website have created an access database for this purpose which is free to download. Trouble is (for us, anyway) it's all in Italian!

Not being at home at the moment, I don't have the specific link to the access database files, but you can have a look on http://www.marklinfan.net/

Hi Diego and welcome to this forum. I use an Excel spreadsheet for my database. It mightn't have all the "bells and whistles" that Access has, but it's a whole lot easier to make changes to.

Hi,

There are a number of options for organizing your toy collection with a database. Simplest way would be a spreadsheet / text document and then there are also desktop applications which usually range from $9.95 - $39.95.

Here is an example on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/...d278a5757#ht_2774wt_1270

In my opinion the best option is an online database that is flexible and stored safely (you can add photos too and all this is stored online so it's safe). This is what I have for my collection, but most of the options out there are either too complex or difficult to use so I developed my own. This is a project I am working on here:

http://www.toymetric.com

Toy Metric is in the final stage of development and will be released soon...if you're interested just let me know and you can try it out.

Best regards,

Paul

Dear Bigdaddynz thanks for the software. I shall put in my PC. It could be very complete. Yes Ozzman the spreadsheet like Excel or Louts or Qpro (somebody remember it?? will go well.
And Paul the toymetric is one very interesting option to put our databse online. I visited it and looks ver good.
Thanks to both. I appreciated your help very much!
Hugs to all, Diego!

One of the biggest considerations, when selecting model railroad software, is ensuring that you can access the data that you have stored when the software is no longer supported by the vendor. The last commercial railroad database I used was great, but it needed a vendor supplied code to run it on a new computer. When the hard drive died and I contacted the vendor ( several times) but I never got a reply. Months of data entry was lost because the database was encrypted by the vendor.

Since then I have been writing my own based on open office. One day, when I find some time, I will finish it off and release it here.

Dear Adrian:

Where are you from? His name here in Argentina is very popular.
Apart, your opinion about the database to our collection is true. The support from the vendor should be considered. More with high probability the faul from the hard disk, pen drive, etc.

Thanks for your opinion
Diego

Hello Diego & Adrian,

That's a point that I considered when making my software and that is why it is all online. No problems about operating system, hard drive corruption, or accessing the data because it is all online (backed up multiple times by default). If you buy a new computer there is no new software to install because everything is accessed from a website. All the data from the website can then be downloaded into CSV files (very common for all databases) and the photos downloaded to folders so the data can easily be backed up and transferred by the user if he/she desires.

Give me a few more weeks and the software will be ready Laugh

Best regards,

Paul

Alberto, when I try to run your database, and click on the first button (which I translate as 'Model Archive'), I get a popup window with the message 'Maschere!frmModelli!IDClasseRotabile', and then when clicking on that button I get the message 'The command or action 'Requery' isn't available now.'

Is the program looking for a non-existent form, or is this something to do with the version of Access I'm running (2010)?

Hi David, the database runs on access 2007 and 2010 without problems, when you click on "Archivio modelli" appears the main page where you can write your model data. Have you modified some objects or words?
