Hi all, After reading thro' Paul's topic on his 3031 and he mentioned the Geprüft (tested) sticker, I thought I'd ask for some information on it, when did it start, what does it mean??? Here's a couple of Loco's I have with the sticker...a 1960 3031 and a 1965 3039. Ian. In some of the late 50's or early 60's catalogue there is a photo showing engines 3021 being tested. I don't know exactly when it started but judging by some locos I saw I would say around 1957-59. One would also have to wonder why you no longer get that label???? I am sure I am not the only one seeing dead on arrival locos!

I think it is but could be 3018 or 3019. |

Hello, The first "Gepruft" (function tested) tags were put on Marklin locomotives in around 1947/1948. They first came out as little round paper tags as we can see here on a DL 800.1: Source: Fine Marklin - Christie's catalog The colors changed over the years and in 1949 or so the silver tin foil tags came in and were stamped with the model number on the back "ST" The colors started with red then purple, orange, green, etc (in some order according to year). The tags also stopped having the model numbers stamped on the back. In case you're curious, in the pre-war years for O Gauge there were inspection tags but they are rarely seen (very rarely! I have only seen one or two). And for 00 Gauge there are no inspection tags (from what I've seen), but I believe there is a special "M" stamp on the locomotive that means it was tested or inspected (although not all loco boxes have this stamp so it is a tenuous conclusion). Best regards, Paul |

Hello,
I haven't written a story on the inspection tags yet. I also haven't seen another story on it but I think it would be interesting. Just like boxes, there are replicas though. I'm not even 100% certain the tags from the 1947 era that I showed in a previous post are original, since they are so rarely seen.

I just obtained a 3047 BR 44 with a box printed in 1968 The test label was lying in the box and has a purple ring printed on it, nothing on the back.

Hi Dale, The purple quality control tags were actually introduced in 1968. However, you should post a photo here, so I can tell you more. In the tags used between the early 1960s and the early 1970s, the last two letters of the word 'geprüft' are clearly separate, whereas in older tags used before 1963, the letter f and the final t were linked by the horizontal line. In the late 1950s, there was such a purple tag as well. Best regards, Mark |

Hi Dale,
Thanks for the photo. That's definitely a tag from the late 1960s. I've seen this handwritten initial, which appears to be a 'J', on other BR44 locos built at that time, e.g 3045, 3046, or 3047, so I guess your loco might have been sold together with this tag. It's a perfect match in any case.
Best regards,
Mark |

I was also wondering, why did not all models get the tag, I believe that all the locos were tested, so what does having the tag mean if anything? |

What is to say they didn't all leave the factory with tags? They're even more easy to lose than the instruction sheet sometimes... original owners probably would have just thought to throw it away with the extra wrappings. Most "mint in box" locos do tend to have the tags so I would wager all locos did leave the factory with tags. Maybe when supplies were short Marklin would re-use tags? So they'd get the tag and then before packaging in the final boxes they'd remove the tags for re-use? - just an idea Paul |

On the topic of reproduction tags I found a few on eBay DE. This is the first time I've actually seen them described as "repro" which is good. If you study them closely you can tell differences from the original, but they appear to be very good reproductions: https://rover.ebay.com/r..._trksid%3Dp2047675.l2557Paul |

Hi Dale, All locos left the Märklin factory with a quality control tag attached to them up to 1972/1973. Märklin didn't make any compromises on quality back then. One member of a German MRR forum remembers that the last year in which he saw the tags on Märklin locos in the MRR shop he used to patronize was 1973. Those must have been the locos produced in autumn 1972 and shipped in time before the Christmas season. Other members of that forum think that the last year the tags were used in was 1972. I have a 3035 from 1972 with a credible tag that I think really belongs to the loco. The colors used in the final years (1969-1972) were orange and red, though the orange ones from 1969 look less shiny than the ones used from 1964 to 1967/68. I've also seen purple ones on locos produced between 1969 and 1972, but often it's hard to tell if the tag that is sold together with a loco is really the original one. Sellers add them to expensive locos to get higher bids. Best regards, Mark |

Thanks I do not believe that my brand new 3029 purchased in 1964 came with a tag, but perhaps my father tossed it for me. My next new loco was a 3078 bought in mid 70's so may have been after the tagging ended. All my other locos from that era are all second hand so it is possible that their tags were discarded, but I would have expected to see many more if they all had them. |

Most tags were discarded or lost after purchase. Nowadays collectors are intrigued by them, but back then most customers just removed them before they used the loco on their layouts. Who would have bought a loco just to put it into a cupboard back then? I don't believe that Märklin delivered locos without a tag before 1973. The workers could not do what they wanted at Märklin's factory, but had to follow standard procedures. Those who checked locos before they were shipped took their jobs seriously. They were actually called 'Paten' (meaning godfather or godmother) at the factory because each of them worked on locos they they knew very well. Obviously, they might have forgotten to attach a tag in rare cases. Best regards, Mark |

sure, I was not suggesting my loco was a special case at all, more of an all or non for a particular model. Where would it have even been attached to a 3029 I wonder? |

Where would it have even been attached to a 3029 I wonder? Nobody's perfect. Even highly motivated Märklin workers must have made mistakes occasionally back then. They might have forgotten a tag. I guess the openings of the two cabin windows on the left side would be the right spot for the tag. Right now, I can't find a single 3029 with a tag on Ebay. Smart sellers who buy whole collections might take them off cheap locos and attach them to expensive ones IMO, and this cheap loco was obviously purchased for children, not collectors. Eddie Hi Eddie, Did you put the tags into a cupboard or box after you got these locos? That's what most buyers must have done in the 1950s or '60s, and later they couldn't match the locos and the tags any more. I think that may be one reason why authentic tags are often sold separately on Ebay, the other one being the one I mentioned above. If you have a few common locos with tags, you can either take them off and attach them to collector's items, or sell them separately. Either way, you'll get more money out of them. A lot of the quality control tags (or Prüfsiegel) attached to pricey vintage locos sold on Ebay are definitely mismatches, whereas the ones attached to cheap locos are often the right ones. Hi all, I have some Märklin locos with the control tags. But this crocodile 3015 from middle of the sixties is my best. The loco is NOS and hasn't been used. The motor and gears didn't move as it was glued from old factory oil. Some years ago I talked to another collector, who bougth nearly each Märklin loco in the fitfties and sixties and put them in a cupboard. Once a year he tested the locos by feeding electricity with a cable. Those locos never saw a track - strange! br from Zurigo Rei |

Hi Paul, Nice find, that's a plausible orange tag printed between about 1963 and 1967. The silver background color is really shiny, as it would have been during those years. Both the instruction manual and the box are dated 1966, so that appears to be a perfect match. Best regards, Mark Edited by user 30 March 2019 21:19:25(UTC)
