This post is on how to use the EuroCity set 43671 to model a prototypical train.

Once, the ICE-T connected Stuttgart with Zurich via Singen. But since a couple of years, the DB has problems with the tilt technology in the ICE-T. Therefore, the SBB provides 5 coaches (one first class and four second class coaches) to replace the ICE-T. To model the train, you may use the Märklin set 43671 (Link to the Märklin Homepage, the set is not yet available) which consists of one Apm, four Bpm and one Apm panorama coach. Besides the panorama coach, all coaches can be used to prototypical model the train. The mix of color schemes add an interesting touch to the consist. Note that the coaches are appr. 26 cm long as they are in 1:100 scale for the length.

As for the locomotives used to pull this train, you may use a red Re 4/4 II or even a Swiss-Express Re 4/4 II (both with rectangle front lights) since these locomotives are used between Zurich (CH) and Singen (D). For the German side, that is between Singen and Stuttgart, many different types of locomotives were and are used. It is prototypical to let a BR 110, BR 115, Br 120 or a BR 181 pull the train (see here for some pics).

EDIT: I just found some pictures I took in April 2008. You may also use a green Re 4/4 II:

As you can see in the following pics, all color schemes for the EC-coaches (not EW IV!) can be used in the InterCity between Zurich and Stuttgart (even the former Cisalpino coaches). On that day, the train came from Stuttgart with a BR 120 in "Verkehrsrot" and will be pulled to Zurich by the green Re 4/4 II seen above.

You don't have to wait for the 43671 Set. You can model the train using the existing 4367 or 4368/4369 coaches. A nice touch would be to add the SBB Apm from the 26544 Cisalpino Set (see photo above). After the termination of the Cisalpino joint venture (SBB-FS), the coaches were returned to regular operations still in their Cisalpino colours. They have since been modified (blue band on the bottom replaced by grey) or repainted in the new corporate livery of the SBB red/white/black.

I congratulate Maerklin on being the first to announce the SBB EC coaches in the new corporate livery. Delivery is scheduled for 12/12. Models in the new livery may still come from Roco as a summer or fall new item before the Maerklin ones are actually released, or may come in a small repaint series from Eyro or other Swiss dealer, but Maerklin was still the first to officially announce these models, even if they are only in 1/100.

Jeremy- no need for a 4367. Marklin's US dealers are blowing out the 43670 (near identical) "Riviera di fiori" car set now. Check with Scott to see what he can get you one for; the prices I have seen are excellent!

Just adding some pictures to show that the train was pulled by other Swiss locos as well:

You may use a Re 4/4 II in
- Swiss Express livery (Roco, HAG and Rivarossi made suitable locos): Link to bahnbilder.de
- the ex-Swiss Express locos in red color (only HAG made a suitable model): Link 1, Link 2 to bahnbilder.de
- red livery (Roco, HAG, Rivarossi and Märklin have or had suitable models): Link to bahnbilder.de
- or in green livery as can be seen above (Roco, HAG, Rivarossi and Märklin have or had suitable models)

For the German side, you may use the BR 120 or BR 181.

Regards,

Tim

Such a train can also be pulled by other SBB loks, including the 37462 Re 460 (in Switzerland) and the 37345/29483 Re 421 in SBB Cargo colours (on the Zuerich-Lindau section of the Zuerich-Munich line).
