Hi Tom,

if your are looking for a model railroad control system you may try Rocrail www.rocrail.net. It is developed under Linux and certainly runs under Linux (and Windows, Mac, ...). It works fine with the CS2 and most other command stations on the market.
If you want to give it a try be sure to start with the tutorial (in best case before even downloading it) as due to its many features the software is not self-explanatory (at least many people think so Smile).

Best regards

Hi Tom,

I'm running Rocrail with openSUSE 11.4. Works fine !
The developers at rocrail.net provides packages for Ubuntu, openSUSE 12.1 and sometimes 11.4, Mac and Win.
You can also download the sources and build the executable.

Cheers
Fabrice

hey does it work with a lower-cost marklin unit like the older digital programmer box? or do you have to get a central station for it?

what is the lowest cost marklin format hardware to use with it?

I fairly sure Rocrail supports the use of a Marklin 6021/6051 controller/interface combination as well as the original Intellibox. CS1/CS2 not necessarily required.

As it is free, there's no harm in downloading it and trying it out.

Hi Tom,

You wrote:

Which "unit" do you refer to?
Rocrail supports the Control Unit 6021 with Interface 6050 / 6051 for example. However, be aware that very old 6050 (first series) had a firmware bug concerning serial interface handling (Marklin offered an update a long time ago). The 6050 / 6051 can also be connected to the old Central Unit 6020.

It all depends on what your demands are. The absolute lowest low-cost approach would be DDX combined with a Delta Control. I personally do not recommend it but if you like DIY-solutions... Be aware you could face compatibility issues with some decoders.

Best regards
