HAMO factory-conversion Locomotives for cross-border traffic

An opportunity emerged on eBay today to purchase another electric locomotive (now the 84th) for my collection. Although I already had bought its conventionally-powered AC sister locomotive #3035 for much more a short time ago, the idea really appeals to me to follow more or less the changes of voltages and current types across Europe, which will add to the operational dimension of the hobby. Both Holland and Italy use direct current for traction. While I'm not quite sure the actual process involved, it most certainly shall be an interesting detail of the trip as a train passes from one country into the next. Direct current may have better running characteristics as well.
With no problem I have been running my Dutch #8327 NS locomotive using overhead feed while the track it runs on supplies a steam- or diesel-powered train on conventional alternating current. Have any other members considered or employed a similar modelling tactic on their own railways?
