Each Wednesday my daughter and her husband come over for dinner along with my grandsons.

Sean is 19 months and Jacob is 3 months.

Sean is very active, and typical of young kids, likes to stick his nose into everything.

So each Wednesday I do my bit in keeping him busy and giving the parents a rest.

He is so indoctrinated as soon as he walks in he takes me straight to the computer room, points to the computer screen and motions me for him sit on my lap and we watch trains. We stop for dinner and then it's back into the computer room for more videos until it's time to go home.

He waves bye bye to the trains as they go past and I'm trying to teach him to wave hello when they come towards us - so far he can lift his hand but hasn't learnt how to wave from left to right.

It seems I have a lot to answer for as well, at child care he won't share the toy trains and goes around going choof, choof, choof, too-oot, too-oot, too-oot and driving everyone crazy (including his parents). Might be time to buy him a wooden Thomas set for his birthday in July.

Luckily I have a program that can download youtube videos so I search high and low for some of my favourite engines and download them so that Sean and I can enjoy. Slowly but surely I am programming him to love the look and sound European trains.

This is the type of trains we watch, so I thought I might share it with you.

As they say, sit back and put the volume up to enjoy the wonderful steam and whistle sounds.

VERY HEART WARMING!
Yes! Get Thomas now and order one of the new battery operated start sets from Märklin! He may be ready for it sooner than you think!BigGrin

My daughter is not much into trains but I do have Thomas and we got a few miles out of it since she was 2. When she was five, I got her the Circus Mondolino.
I set up a separate table next to my set and connected our two layouts together.
We once spent a weekend building a playmobile circus. The parts were dumped on my layout and I had a freight train deliver the parts to her.

It was a great time following the instruction book so we could deliver the right parts at the right time!ThumpUp

Now that is a life skill worth learning! BigGrin

What a great idea!

I second Thomas, my kids love it...gets more milage than any of my other Locs somehow, even if he is a little bit of a derail magnet.

This is such a charming story about bonding with grandpa! It's an instantly appealing visual and a great pleasure for all involved. But your grandson is content to watch trains on a computer screen, and steam trains at that? It's now several generations since steam has been taken off mainline operations and yet it still fascinates the young who may never have seen one in actual operation. The child cannot have learned "choo-choo" from anything that runs today.

Your recount brings to mind the way I drove my parents nuts before a train set wound up under the Christmas tree 45 years ago: the Long Island RR used to cross through my hometown at Greenlawn, then only a rail depot. As we'd sit in the idling station wagon waiting for the gates to rise, I'd pester my mother to name the types of freight cars as they'd pass. It was such an adventure for me (guess it still is).

This week something a bit different.

We leave Germany and head to Poland, where we see a Polish Pacific, a new electric - Dragon - an electric railcar and to finish off a Polish Kriegslokomotiv - 2-10-0. And wonder of wonders, not only is she pulling a good load of passenger carriages (that look awfully like the Thunderboxes) put pulling the Dragon as well. Amazing.

The next two videos are of the BR 03-1010. Again some amazing shots. The steam and the whistles.....absolutely magical sounds, so good as a matter of fact that Sean is all ready moving his arms like rods on the wheels. I should really take a video of him watching a videoBigGrin

Don't mind the introductory music, a bit jazzy for the first video, but really out there for the second..........electronic bagpipesConfusedBlink ConfusedBlink ConfusedBlink ConfusedBlink Confused

Hope you enjoyed it as much as Sean and I didBigGrin ThumpUp

This week we begin with a combination 95, 44 and 41 pulling a good length goods train

Then we move on to Koblenz for a pair of beauties, streamlined 01 and 24, along with steam on the water.

And finally a 52 and the green DR 18 201 at Löbau

One thing all the videos have in common is that all the locos and a big majority of coaches are from the DR (the old East Germany) I suppose in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's the DR continued using steam due to economic reasons.

Enjoy
