Hello all,

I've run into a problem with my layout I didn't anticipate using software to design it. I have a "tree" of K track 2262/2263 turnouts that ends up in such a way that two of the motors are facing each other...so there is not room for both. Is it possible to modify these to mount the motor on the opposite side? I am looking at under board mounting, but I am not sure if this will really solve the issue or not. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? These turnouts exist in an area of the layout that is not easy to reach, so I need to keep them electric. These are the newest 2262/2263 with the "slim" motors, I have moved the older ones with the big motors elsewhere...

The highlighted sections in the attached image are where the motors collide.

Brandon,

Could you change 1 of them to a sleek turnout, whereas you can mount the solenoid on either side.

Possibly, but not sure how much "downstream" effect that will have on the track replacement. Which ones support this? 2272/2273? Any others?

I may have been wrong about mounting it under the table...it might fit. Does anyone know how far the 7548 protrudes from the side of the turnout?

Another question: how deep can the under board mounting for the turnout be? My board is effectively 2.5 inches thick where this switch is located.

The Märklin under base board mounting kit (7548) will only allow to 1" thickness. However you could replace the flimsy throw wire with music wire.

I found another possible option: Viessmann 4554. I am not crazy about the way the motor looks, but it mounts much higher on the switch and might not have a clearance issue. It looks like this will work with analog control as well.

I think I found a solution to my problem, maybe this will help someone else. I mount one of the turnout motors upside down. I didn't think it would work, but after test fitting it, it seems ok. Since my layout "base" is 2" of extruded foam on 1/2" plywood, I have the ability to carve into the foam to allow the switch motor to sit mostly flush. I realize the motors won't be quiet parallel to the turnouts, but I don't think it's any worse than the derivation when wires get tucked under the motor running a temporary layout. What do you think? (sorry for the crummy iPhone photo, it's taken on a bit of an angle so it doesn't look flat, plus the lens distortion)

Couldn't you just mount the motor on the other side? In the picture above, the bottom switch, you should be able to mount the motor on the left side....
Mounting the motor upside down should be okay too from what I've read.

I do not think that overlapping the motors will work. It will not work reliably.
Avoid the underfloor mounting if at all possible - they are horribly unreliable.

Mounting the motors upside down works well. So well in fact that I dis that with all mine in visible areas. Even if access from below is restricted. See http://layout.mixmox.com/1/Switch_motor_thread for a solution in that case...

Are these two clashing turnouts critical for the planned traffic, i.e. will trains be coming from below or above in your track diagram? If coming from above, what about simply leaving one unmotorised?

Hi,

I myself am experimenting with servo's to power my switches. Allthough at first for reasons of reliability. A nice side effect is they use very luittle room.

Its not very difficult, and the servos are not expenisive.

If you are interested, here is a description how to do it:

Hi Brandon,

Check this link out. This is what I am going to use for my C track turnouts.

Thanks all. I'll have to look into these options. It's really just the one turnout that is a problem at the moment, I may be re-addressing it in the next week or so. Down the line I may decide to do the rest just for consistency, but that remains to be seen. I've been a bit busy lately, so pretty quiet on the forum here.
