UPDATE: loco 3027, the bridges and the 4026 baggage car sold to member soest - he is fairly local. Worked out well - avoided the shipping and all that.
Remaining items will be posted in for sale soon.

(final inventory completed and all pics (except for some track, end blocks etc - see posting below)

Hi to all!

I have to admit that I have been 'lurking' a bit prior to posting.

This board and users have provided some very good tips already. The flap codes really helped. Thanks for the great info!

A note in advance - if this post in inappropriate/too long, I apologize in advance...

Background:

My father started the train hobby as a means to do some father/son bonding. The first train was Lionel starter kit when I was 7yrs old in Canada. Shortly after that we moved to Germany and once there, he started what is now my Merklin/Faller collection. Hate to say it but it has not been used all that much since we moved back to Canada in 1970.

Because I have some health issues and daughters not into the 'train thing' (as they call it), I am in the process of cataloging everything with the intention of selling it. Ideally it will bring joy to someone else.

As far as prices, I have done some online comparisons so I have a slight idea of pricing.

Have no problem with someone making a profit but would prefer someone getting real joy out of it - much like my father and I did. Either way just do not want to 'give' it away.

Items: (partial list) The list is being added to and the underlined (bold) number links to the detail pictures).

The cataloging is a big job and still in progress but I need some help in identifying stuff (see pics below).
Also looking help in identifying anything that might be rare.

Really hope I am not out of line or asking for too much.

ALL items are in the original boxes, have original manual(s) and have the original price tags on them (unless indicated otherwise).
  1. 3016 Railbuse 69 316 MA 0164 nl/Manual/Original Inspection Tag
  2. 4018 Railbuse 69 468 MA 0263 sh
  3. 3027 Steam Loco Class 44 690 Ep.III 69 327 TN 0561/Manual
  4. 3065 Diesel Locomotive 69 365 AN 0963 nl/Manual/original replacement springs in box
  5. 3062 Powered F7-A loco New Haven 69 362 ON 0261 nl/Manual
  6. 4062 Unpowered "dummy" loco New Haven/69 462 ON 0261 nl
  7. 4026 Express Baggage Car/Box good shape but id flap missing
  8. 4029 Sleeping Coach 69 479 RN 0360 sh
  9. 4032 Passenger car with tail lights 69 482 YN 0660 sh
  10. 4520 Tank Car with 3 tanks 69 432 TO 0661 sh
  11. 4570 Caboose AT&SF 69 570 001 0361 sh
  12. 4572 Box Car Santa Fe (orange box) 69 572 Onm 0361 sh
  13. 4575 Gondola Wagon Dixie Line 69 575 ON 0761 sh
  14. 6170 2 - 110V transformer 1- in original box with price / 1 no box
  15. 7064, 7065, 7066 - Early Style Bridge Pillars
  16. 7192 Grade Crossing with center track and two 'red mark' tracks - orig box

Many more Including: 7161, 7162, 7163, 7167, 7168, Switches, track, 7190, 7191 replacement parts etc

Questions: Thanks to all for answering my question.
  1. Does the original price tag on the box make a difference?
  2. I have signals (7039 7040, 7042, 7188) in RED boxes - no 'box' codes that I can see. Mean anything?
  3. Some track pieces have a 'beige' under-coating and some 'silver' - does that mean anything?
  4. What do I do with empty boxes (i.e.: Green Boxes 5104, 5113)?
  5. Any idea where I could post pictures of my items (Think too many to attach here)?
  6. Some items have original 'crimp' electrical connections - worth mentioning?
  7. Any info where I can find out about Faller items (such as Faller B-4733 AMS grade crossing which integrates with the Marklin Track)?

There are a couple of items I can not Identify - first two pictures(no boxes).

Mike

Hi msp160, and welcome to the forum !

As per your questions, I'll start by putting down some answers in highlight below :

Questions:

1. Does the original price tag on the box make a difference? <-- Not really, the quality of the original box however does make a difference in the sale price.

2. I have signals (7039 7040, 7042, 7188) in RED boxes - no 'box' codes that I can see. Mean anything? <-- All boxes have a code. For signals they are usually located under the box cover, on one of the angle flaps. These can be carefully unfolded to access the code.

3. Some track pieces have a 'beige' under-coating and some 'silver' - does that mean anything? <-- Depending on the date of fabrication, the underside of tracks can be different. Beige is "older" I believe, therefore more valuable from a collector's point of view ... I don't have a precise answer by memory, but it's here on the forum, somewhere ... I'll search for it too ^^ ;)

4. What do I do with empty boxes (i.e.: Green Boxes 5104, 5113)? <-- If you do some searching on eBay, you can see that empty boxes are sold as is. There is a "market" for these ...

5. Any idea where I could post pictures of my items (Think too many to attach here)? <-- By all means, please post pictures here, this is what this forum is for, and they will help to get you answers, no doubt ...

6. Some items have original 'crimp' electrical connections - worth mentioning? <-- It's a minor issue for pricing, but providing connectors certainly helps. Again, pictures will help ...

7. Any info where I can find out about Faller items (such as Faller B-4733 AMS grade crossing which integrates with the Marklin Track)? <-- I'm not so informed on this topic, but again, I suggest you search eBay to get an idea of what Faller items go for these days ...

I'm sure other forum members will provide far more precise info ...
Hope this helps in meantime ^^

Welcome Mike,

You can use the "attach" to upload pics, no worries.
However, there are some restrictions. Max 500KB/picture size to show directly in the forum, and max 20 pics/post.
If you have more than 20 pics, make another "Post Reply" and attach more pics to the new message posted...

Well, welcome to the forum. I don't have a lot to add, just a few thoughts. It looks like what you have, based on what you have posted, is a nice little collection that certainly would attract the attention of a Marklin collector who wanted a good, basic, classic US based train-set. Now, I am not a collector of the US marks, but I do recognize that among the items listed, there a quite a few 'icons' of classic Marklin. As a matter of fact, I have some of them as part of a rare set-the boxed set 3162. Look around as much as you can to see if there are any boxes for sets.It doesn't look like you have the set, but it seems like you have the individual components that constitute the set, but individually boxed. Unless you need the money right away, I would suggest you take your time with the sale. If you need to unload quickly, you could try your luck with EBay, but prices are kind of low right now. You could list the items in the forum as for sale, and ask for offers (and maybe consider offers from more established members).I would say that most of the regular forum participants are pretty good guys and you might get a good, fair price that way. But first, take multiple pics of the items (side and bottom especially) and boxes (including flap)and keep posting them. There are members that collect all marks/eras, etc.that will give you good estimates.

    Greetings Mike,
I see that you've already gotten some outstanding advice from very knowledgeable member of the forum.

From what I have learned, there are some Marklin models that are very 'Classic' but not very rare. Those that want them, already have them. Then there are some more unique items, that can truly be called rare, that do command decent prices.

What jumps out at me, what has the collector in my all gushy, is the near perfect condition of that New Haven F7. The paint on that particular Marklin model was not that great; it chipped very easily. What you've got is almost Gem condition. It should command a higher price, to a true collector. I'm sorry that my current finances don't allow me to offer you a handsome price.

Also, if you have switches, those sell well for decent prices, as do the signals.

    But again, condition is critical.

Remember that Ebay and Auction Houses will take a percentage of the sale price as their fee. So, in doing a private sale, take that difference into price consideration.

    Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the great advice.

Still trying to complete my list and will update all of you first!

I will offer my collection for sale here first as I think it is the least I can do to thank this great community and it's members.

    Pictures Updates: Photobucket.

    Anyone know what these are?

    msp160,

First item looks to be a 7050 (road sign with flashing light and it's contact section 5127) which goes with the 7192 crossing. Hard to say from that one pic ...
    See here: 7050

Second item looks like a 4503 flat car which has been painted an unoriginal green on the interior ...
    See here : http://www.bigio.it/Guter/4503/4503_100.htm

That second site can help you identify a lot of locos and rolling stock ^^

    Hope that helps ThumpUp

    Thanks for the help!

The 4503 flat car is actually grey - just wrong light when I took the picture.

Also found the original box for the 7050.

    msp160,

I would suggest you group, or 'bundle', your items by type ... the main types of items roughly follow this sequence:

    1. Locomotives :
    - Steam
    - Diesel
    - Electric

    2. Rolling stock :
    - Passenger
    - Freight
    - Special

    3. Track (tracks are usually sold by half circle, or by sets of 10, as Marklin does ...):
    - Straight track (5106, 5111, 5115 ...)
    - Straight "make-up" tracks (short lengths)
    - Curved track (5100 = Standard circle / 5200 = Parallel circle / 5120 = Industrial circle...)
    - Curved "make-up" tracks (short lengths)
    - Switches
    - Bridges
    - Catenary

    4. Signals

    5. Transformers and Control boxes

    6. Accessories:
    - Crossings
    - Turntables
    - Cranes
    - Magazines ...

    And ...;

... with good photos of the items themselves, you don't need to photograph the boxes in detail, just clearly mention their state in the description ...

Great inventory job btw ^^ ThumpUp
