Hello everyone,

I recently got a set of Brawa 5450 and 5460 lamps on eBay for a very good price. I believe these are discontinued. Some unopened, some used. I have found most of the bulbs are not working (probably the reason for the price). Does anyone have any idea of what I can do for replacements? I believe the direct replacement is Brawa #3275, which also appears to be discontinued. I found some on eBay, but the price isn't great. I was wondering if anyone knew a good alternative, or a good product (or method) for LED conversion instead? Or maybe these lamps aren't worth the trouble...

Thanks!

Hi Brandon,all,
You might want to check at Radio Shack or DIY electronics store or a on-line,...
Now,if you want to convert to LED's that will depend if one can remove the bulb socket from the lamp.
Email me some photos and we will have a look see,...Cool

Hi Brandon,

You might want to have a look at the following links, before the surgery BigGrin

Although UK-based, postage for such small items to the US wouldn't be excessive, I wouldn't think.

M.G. Sharp

...or these on eBay.com ($9.25 for 4)

eBay.com

...or these from Germany

Lokshop

Hope this helps,

Here's a quick photo. I can take some closeups later. I think it will be pretty difficult due to the tiny wire. I saw Viessmann has a E type screw in LED that is a direct replacement for 16/18v bulbs, but I am not sure if this is really applicable (Viessmann #76019 "Fits E 5.5 Screw-In Socket"). I would assume this has a capacitor built in to the threaded base of the bulb below the LED. Other than the obvious "will it work" question with this, I would also prefer a warm light (at least warm LED). I have a couple of modern Marklin LED lamps on my layout, I'm not very fond of the amount of light put our or the colour. I think I could get a brighter LED if I do manage to convert.

I also wonder if a Marklin bulb could just be used in the Brawa such as Marklin 600100 (or even 600190)?

Edit: Thanks NightOwl, I may try to order from overseas (I am in the US) if it comes to that. The price is good.

Hi Brandon,

If you have a caliper, then you can check the thread of the Brawa lamps. If the diameter is 5.5 mm, then you be quite sure the any E5.5 bulb would fit.

By the way the E is short for Edison and E5.5, E10, E14, E27 etc are different Edison threads used on bulbs, low energy lamps and LED lamps.

My experience from H0 street lamps has been that they are too bright. At this time of year in the northern hemisphere one can go out at night and study how much (or how little) light a single street light gives and compare it to what an H0 street light gives. My experience was that a couple of ten of metres, let's say 20 m (or 22 yards), away it is quite dark, but that was not the case 23 cm (or 9") away from the H0 version. I did some experiments with resistors in series with the lamp, but that turned the light a bit too red in my mind. So on my new layout I'll try using LEDs and hope they are not as bright.

WesternPacific,

They are E5.5 for sure. I have found some other bulbs (Piko for one) that are E5.5. I am sure HO lights are generally too bright. I never noticed, but it's good observation. The LED lamps like the new Marklin ones I mentioned are on the more realistic side reflecting on your observation. I wish the light were warmer, but if the layout is more modern the "white" light may be more like some current prototype florescent lamps in use.

I was even thinking of getting some Faller 180660 "warm" led lamps for lighting the inside of houses, checking to see if the LED "bulb" in use here has a built-in resistor, and if so perhaps testing one of the bulbs in the Brawa lamps if they are E5.5. If it works, the price may be ok as it seems the Faller unit can be had for $2.50 USD or so, which is cheaper than some of the incandescent E5.5 options.

I have also seen that javascript:__doPostBack('forum$ctl03$PostReply','')some Lionel use E5.5, so I may be able to find something locally, since I think Lionel is also in the 18v range.
