Maybe people know this, but since when has M been formally giving the choice of running a turntable from the cs2 with a k84?

After I updated my cs2 to 2.0 today, I was playing with the web interface on my cs2 at http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/index.html. (it needs work, but it's coming along).

Anyway, I scanned the "Help" (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/hilfe/en/index.html) and saw an option that I didn't remember, way at the bottom in the "The setup" section, which normally is for setting up the cs2. After view, there is an link called "Usage".

If you click on "Usage" (or "View, actually) it takes you to the "Turntable Configuration" help page, which is subtitled "Connections with the k84 Decoder" - http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/h.../en/drehscheibe_alt.html

It gives a complete layout of how to connect the cs2 to a turntable with a k84, you can even name it: "The turntable can be assigned a name of your choice under "Name". And you can even choose your own address.

There's even a help page for the wiring - http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/h.../en/k84_drehscheibe.html

(btw, did some poking around - English, French, Dutch cs2 help is equally messed up with the turntable being a strange option in the CS2 setup section. But German help does have the "Drehscheibe" entry in the keyboard section. )

In the Keyboard section on the cs2, if you choose a device and edit it, one of the options in the drop down is indeed "Turntable with K84".

Maybe this is old news, but if it works it's great since it could save some $$$ since I have a spare k84 and won't need a 7687. Per the diagram, I'll need a couple of 1N4001 Diodes (gottem).

I have no idea what this would work like, but it sounds interesting. There are some folks who use k84s for their Turntables out there (Dale Schultz has a version on his site) but it's different wiring and doesn't mention cs2. Has anyone tried this?

David

Nope, but I probably should, since I can't get my turntable to work with my 7687 decoder - red light flashes when I try to rotate to the next track in programming mode. TT works OK with analog controller.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I use the LDT decoder it works great. I have not tried it with the K84.

I think I got a dud one. I see on the forum back in 2005 there was someone who had similar symptoms to my 7687, and had to send the decoder back to Marklin.

Here's a pdf file with the particular instructions that sokato refers to.

Since my 7687 decoder was not working properly out of the box (turntable did not move when instructed to move, with decoder in programming mode), and given I had a K84 on hand, I decided to try both of these setups.

Firstly I tried the setup described in the Marklin CS2 help file. I couldn't get it working, mainly because the connections shown do not line up with the connections on the newest Marklin turntable. Five connections are shown in the Marklin diagram, but six are on the turntable (yes I know 2 of those can be used with 'brown'), and it wasn't clear which way around the connections should go. I therefore flagged that as a failed effort and then went on to Dale's setup.

Firstly, because I did not want to open up the Marklin analog turntable controller to remove the bridge rectifier (see Dale's instructions - link in Sokato's first post) I purchased a new rectifier. The specs on that are 400v @ 2amps, cost about $3 NZD. The pinouts on the rectifier I purchased are different to the one shown in Dale's article, and with that in mind I proceeded to wire up the K84 and turntable. The other difference to note is that the labels for the turntable connections are different between Dale's and mine - physically they are in the same place, but they are labeled differently. So here's a table - Dale's connections on the left, mine on the right.

B = B1
0 = B2
0 = B3

1 = B4
2 = B5
3 = B6

Apart from that, and the changed rectifier connections due to the different pinouts, I wired the components up as per Dale's diagram. I gave the K84 an address, and then selected the appropriate keyboard location on the CS2 screen. I can say it all worked a treat. The first two switches essentially reverse the turntable - you have to activate both switches to make that happen. The third switch is the on/off switch which makes the turntable move. Keep in mind that when you reverse the turntable the polarity of the on/off switch also reverses - i.e. it becomes an off/on switch. Apart from those minor quirks it works great. Rather than try to get my 7687 fixed or replaced, I think I will stick with this arrangement.

Well done Dale, and thanks for publishing the method of setup.

Hey all,

Could someone tell me if all the connections are the same if using a TT 7186. I am wanting to connect to CS2 and a bit confused when using the K84. Do I need the diodes?

I wouldn't bother trying - I couldn't get the circuit that Marklin publish to work. I gave up and instead used the circuit Dale Schultz publishes on his website, which works fine.

Dale suggests using the rectifier out of the turntable controller, but I didn't want to pull my controller apart, so I purchased a rectifier for a few dollars - rectifier specs are 400v ac at 2 amps.

Dale's circuit can be found at: http://modeltrain.serveh...igitizing_turntable_7286

And a further discussion re using a turntable with a K84 is found here: https://www.marklin-user...smann-5213---SOLVED.aspx
