I recently received a collection of HO scale model trains, and many of these are Marklin. They are almost all brand new in the box, the shrink wrap is removed but it appears the trains were never removed from their boxes. They still have the bits of tissue paper around them, and from the ones I looked at they are completely blemish free and look unused. I don't really know the value of these, but I researched several of the locomotives and it appears some may be worth several hundred dollars or more.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do with these? I am not really a model train person, and I have talked to a couple local stores around my area that want to give me $4,000 - $6,000 for the whole set, but it seems to be worth much more. Is selling them all on eBay individually the best way to get their value? Just the ones I looked up came up to around $20,000, and many of them I can't even find a price, they say "no longer available."

There are probably 300 - 400 items, including sets, cars and locomotives, around 100 of which are Marklin.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum bablackman. There are always members here who are interested in purchasing good quality Marklin items. If you want to try members first, you should post a list of items with a description and a photo of each item. Members here can help with pricing too.

To be able to help with pricing, we do need to know what you are selling, so a list of the Marklin items would be great. Often, an item in a good quality original box will be worth more than the same quality item without a box.

Selling on ebay is always an option. A fellow Marklin enthusiast I know here in NZ, recently sold many of his H0 Marklin items back to people in Germany.

Yep, ThumpUp we LOVE pictures.

As for selling, it really depends on how much effort you want to put in. You won't need to read far through this forum to find that for many of us, Marklin is more than a hobby, it gets into your blood in the way the same way that people get passionate about classic cars, sports and many other pastimes (I nearly wrote "less-nerdy" there but that's not being fair on any of us really - we do have lives outside of Marklin).

If you are just after the money, then auction via Ebay or a specialist auction-house may be your best bet. An auction house will enable to you dispose of the lot in one relatively easy transaction.

If you have more time on your hands and don't mind the packing and posting, selling via Ebay internationally will get you a good return, but you are at mercy of just who is watching over those few days.

On the other hand, if you like the thought of some or all of your items going to a good home then this forum is as good a place as any. We all like a bargain for sure but we are also an honest bunch and I doubt something would sell ridiculously low.

I'm sure many of us are wondering whether you might have that one item we've been searching a long time for and a listing by box number would be a great start, and of course photos.

Bear in mind that if you sell to a shop, they will price according to making a profit - and fair enough. You'll get cash up front, and they may turn the items over quickly or could be stuck with them for several weeks/months. They take that risk. A private sale whether via Ebay or direct through a forum such as this will on average get you a price a little higher than a shop will pay you, and the buyer hopefully gets it a little cheaper than if we had to buy on the open market.

And of course, some of us (me) also love the story behind how something came into another person's hands - private sale, family gift, 'attic-find', closing of a shop, old warehouse stock etc - those are sometimes the best finds because you get all sorts of unexpected stuff as well like old literature, spare parts, advertising material (signs, posters etc).

Do you know the general vintage of what you have?, are we talking items relatively recent (say the last 10-15 years), or older than that?

Keep us informed.

Regards from a hot and sunny Australia

Since blackman never posted again after his initial post 6 months ago I assume he made alternative arrangements for his Marklin.

Yep, we seem to get a few of them coming through.

It would be nice to get some follow-up of how they got on and of course the pictures to drool over.

Hi kumarvartak,

I do not think there is much left of this lot, I believe it was all sold on ebay months ago. You probably will not get a reply from the op. However ebay.de and US ebay are great sources of Märklin items, nowadays one can find sellers that ship eveywhere, only the shipping cost can sometimes be prohibitive, many will combine to save on shipping though. It is good that you have a relative in Texas in case you see something that you like and the seller does not ship worldwide. Good luck with your buying, I am a big fan of the die cast and tin plate as well, this container lot was mostly all newer stuff anyway.
