A friend has offered to give me what I believe is a Lima 149728 DB BR 103 110-3. Anyone familiar with this model? Any problem areas? Is it possible to stick a decoder on it?

I don't know this particular model. But there should not be any problem related to the addition of a decoder. I converted to 3 rail a very old Lima SNCF BB67001 loco (in fact my 1st locomotive) with the pancake "G" motor with no troubles at all. In the mid-eighties Lima started using a central motor with driveshaft transmission to both bogies, a system quite refined for the era. Maybe you are lucky and your loco is like that.

It is a common 1970s and 1980s ringfield motor and i think the model was 2-rail DC.
