Roco used to make a NEM coupler with the classic Fleischmann head. This could be installed on modern Maerklin cars/coaches to combine them with classic Fleischmann rolling stock. For newer Fleischmann models, many either have a NEM socket or are equipped with Fleischmann's Profi couplers, which can also be ordered separately for NEM.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

By the older Fleischmann stock, I guess you mean the old hook/bar type of metal coupler, which on the earliest Fleischmann, was riveted on.

Yes, you can certainly change these by removing the rivet (you will need a drilling machine or file to remove the rivet). The stock produced by Fleischmann after about 1960 pre-empted the requirement by many modellers to change the coupling, so the rivet was replaced by a small removeable plastic spigot. This worked very well and is easy to remove and replace.

The coupler you need to buy for compatibility with new Marklin, is the Fleischmann 6523 loop/hook type which is widely available. You should also at the same time buy some replacement springs (which sit at the rear of the coupler) which are sold in packets, Fleischmann #6548.

I have made many of these coupler conversions.
