Hi

I'm back new in modelling after 25 years and am looking at a Marklin starter set, with an interest in Swiss (mixed with Bodensee Austrian / German locos). I'm considering the swiss freight starter set 29483 to get my hands on a mobile station and a nice loco (i've previously bought a basic entry railion 185 entry transformer control set to try out Marklin).

Weighing up if this 29483 is a good choice loco or should I opt for separate purchase of a mobile station and individual locos (considering the 37360 Ae610) or perhaps shell out for the 37320 Re 10/10.

Anyone have any suggestions to offer?

Hi Dave.

That starter set is a nice one. I would go for it, and then add to your loco stud with others from the range. In my experience it's always cheaper to get the controller with a start set, especially if you like the train that's included.

Welcome Back Dave! Get that starter set! You will not be sorry - I got the 29539, with MS2, 2 turnouts with mechanisms and decoders, and 5 wagons. Instant play time!!
After that you can get more C track/turnouts, and a loco or 2......or 3 or 4......Be warned!

the 29483 is a good Swiss start Set. basically you get the MS and the track for the price of the Lok and the cars. The tracks included are the same as the other start sets. The Re 421 is used between Germany and Switzerland as well as for passenger traffic between Zurich and Munich. So, you can mix Swiss, Italian and German (and other countries) for the freight cars. The 43670 coach Set represents a consist like the ones on the Zuerich to Munich route. The Start Set allows for a train length of 2-3 coaches, so by combining the Start Sets, you can extend the straight section long enough for a full 5-6 coaches.

As far as additional loks, if you do not have the space right now for a Multiple Unit Lokset (Re 10/10), you could opt for the 37322 Re 6/6 by itself or take the 37320 and operate each lok as a separate Lok. The 37360 Ae 610 are only used for freight trains. I use mine with the Liliput Postcontainer cars 240035-37).

Another Set worth considering if you still can find it is the 26534 with Re 4/4II and three lightsteel coaches.

As far as operating the Re 10/10 as a consist with the MS, it can be done, but it requires both loks to be set to the same address. With the 6021, I use the Lok address 10 when operating as a consist, and 66 and 44 when operating the loks on their own. The addresses can be changed by isolating the loks on a track section and resetting the address as per instructions.

Welcome to the forum Dave. I'd say to go for the starter set. I've even been considering getting the loco and freight cars from that set from a dealer who breaks the sets up and sells the items individually - I don't need another MS2, etc.

About the set 26534 with RE4/4 II....the last , ultimate few batchs were sold under promotion from Marklin, if you can find some.....I still recently have seen some of them around 240 E...(which is a very good deal , considering the quality of these items...)Add a complete MS2 set with trafo for about 150/160 E ....and rails .
About the green RE 10/10 consist : an interesting version of the green RE 6/6 with round front lights (former versions...)is included .
But I agree with all : preferably go with a starter set including a control station if you can...( because buying pieces of track in detail is more expensive.)
