Hi everyone,
I've cancelled the NSW Garratt because every time I inquire about the delivery date the date gets pushed forward by another 2 month.
initial order date: March 2010, the first delivery date was August 2010, than October and I was told it always gets delivered just before Christmas, than they had trouble with the sound it was announced middle of January and the latest is in 7 weeks from now.

I will re order it when and if it is available.

you just cannot believe Manufacturers Delivery date announcements.
Only believe it when you see it on Ebay or in the shop.

A friend has just made 2 Garretts from Kits. They look great.

I remember a couple of years ago when Nev and I went to a model railway conference in Ipswich, a number of people were complianing that it takes 2 or 3 years from order before a new loco is available.. One of the "manufacturers" admitted at the meeting that they take orders until they get to a "minimum" and then the build commences.. Seems to be that they would benefit from a system whereby potential customers could see the number of pre-orders before placing their orders..

I also remember some complaints about the "manufacturer" asking for more money before delivery.. In one case this was because the original supplier went out of business or refused the orders...

I went away from that conference thinking that the only way to buy an Australian edition of a loco was to see it and then pay money - pre-order seems a very risky business... Crying

Australian manufacturers are not the only ones guilty of only making models after sufficient models have been ordered. I believe it is common practice for many US model manufacturers, an it's no secret. I have seen this too in European manufactures that give priority to models that have been pre-ordered in large numbers, thereby leaving buyers one(crucial) car short of a train(LS models, Benelux driving trailer)
Hopefully this manufacturer does not let you wait as long as Artitec left people waiting for the DE1, which was delivered three years late!
In the meantime, DJH offers a whitemetal kit that's available right nowThumpUp

In fairness to Eureka Models, they, like a number of other manufacturers, have been having major trouble with their supplier in China. One result being the movement of production to an alternative factory.

Bob,

I'm fully aware of the situation and have been in contact with Ron over the period described in my opening post.
If I would have been told otherwise I would except the delays but nothing was mentioned to me of any further delays because of the alternative production facility.

Nothing has been mentioned in their news flyer since I've shown interest in March 2010.
In fairness to its customers, it would be appropriate to let us know, I've been sending emails (unanswered) over this period of time and on occasions have rang Eureka models.

You may have more facts available than I have but in fairness to my post I have been active to consolidate and find out what is happening with the proposed model.

I take your point and except difficulties may have been for many distributors of model trains but at the same time if you announce a re-run is under way some sort of communication between distributor and customer should be part of customer service.

It doesn't hurt to write a small note saying, because of unforeseen circumstances this model has been delayed for considerable time, a.) sound module (apparently has now been fixed), new manufacturer or other delays without going into too much detail, we will announce the delivery date in due course.

China Back at Work.

China returned to work last Monday after the Chinese New Year holiday break and in response to our emails information regarding deliveries is starting to filter back to us from our factories.
The first news received is from the old factory who have advised that assembly of the re-run of our AD60 class Garratt is underway and that dispatch should take place the last week in April which suggests a mid-May arrival at Port Botany.

Projects to be completed at Sanda Kan.

At the June meeting it was agreed that the re-run of the AD60, the re-run of the C38, the sound equipped CPH/CTHs and the 40 class would all be completed by Sanda Kan and that these would be delivered before the end of 2010.

Bob, you may can shed some light onto the 4 month unaccounted period between December and April and explain to me what happened.

I only know what appears on the Eureka web-site and it must be said, that has not been updated as well or as frequently as it was in the past. I would be interested in obtaining an AD60 when the next run finally appears, assuming the price is not prohibitive. The pound is away down against the Australian dollar.

That looks like it might be possible to make that Garrett into a 3 rail without to much effort... $680 is not too much for all that metal.. Has anyone ever built one of these things?

Looks like a combination of brass and whitemetal to me. It isn't a problem when building. As long as your iron isn't too hot, soldering whitemetal is actually very easy, easier than brass.

Do you use normal lead solder or silver? What treatment do you need to use before it is painted?

Nev, Rick,

Any follow up on what Adrian has mentioned or who do you think is a person of knowledge and authority regarding brass kits.
