What kind of LEDs are you using?

Svein,

I've bought them at our local dealer, they are very tiny.
I think he sells them to go into cars.

I've put the loco together last night, found a decoder and the smoke works but the light ain't.
So I have to think of reconstructing the led's and I have a fair idea how to.

Thanks for your compliment.

Just a random thought:

Any reason why post-war Marklin gave all of its locos the -800 designation?

I can't keep any of them straight.

Regards,
Paul

Thanks everyone for the compliments

I had difficulties applying the led's in my first attempt and construction.
I've blown about 6 led's and than decided, it is time to find another solution.

So to simplify it, I've soldered the led's straight onto the PCB instead having another PCB, (previous pictures/ back of loco).
The front was pretty much the same and again I've decided to solder the Led's straight onto the PCB. I've made longer led's covers. Put light diffusers on the original front removable bulb holder.
Some cosmetic changes will take place in due course to eliminate any light shining through other areas.

All in all I was pleased with the conversion.

Here are some spare parts I have saved over the years, there are about 20 plastic boxes, each with different parts.
the little isolator o-rings came from the screw in bulb holders

Again all made of spare parts.

Here is the revised version of soldering the Led's straight onto the PCB and they just glide through the back holes of the housing.

Chris will find out why they called them the 800 series.

Excellent work John! The pictures tell the story well! I have managed to convert my old Marklin P8 from 1978 with a hamo and ESU V3.0 M4 and it now runs very good. Excellent slow speeds etc. I am now inspiered to add smoke and sound, since I have space in the tender.

I made a misstake and purchased another ESU decoder for an old 3000 I wanted to convert, but its a V3.0 but not M4..and I cant get it to talk to the MS. Will make sure I get the M4 in the future.

Do you think its possible to add a small speaker to a TM800 as well? N format decoder and speaker perhaps?

Greetings

Roger,

I don't think so, there could be enough room for a micro sound decoder and may be a speaker in the next carriage or visa versa, the same goes for the same loco but this time with a tender (RM 800).

I've just drilled a hole into the BR 81 (3031) and will add a smoke generator into this loco as well.

Having changed the bulbs for led's 2 bottom, 1 top and glued them in, so they don't pop out, I had the task of bending the wires (plus and minus)far enough away from the smoke generator and at the same time not touching the walls of the metal housing.
Will have to unsolder wires and cover them with a rubber tube.

The contact for the smoke generator should be easy and hopefully everything is done by Thursday.

All in all, I think I would have about 20 steam locos and when I'll clear or find the short in my layout, I can let some steam off.

Thanks for the compliment

regards.,

John
