What was or still is the Primex line of Marklin? Was this a higher quality line of product?

Regards, Kevin

It is the opposite. Primex was the lower end I think before they started calling it the Hobby line. The group can correct me if I am wrong on this.

it is a cheaper line that was (is?) sold in shops such as supermarkets in Germany. I remember seeing it in Spar when we lived in Munich. Quality is probably the same (same factory, etc.) but the detailing is not as good and a 3 axles loco may have just 2 in the Primex version for example. Some color differences are there to distinguish them E.g., Flatcars inside, and track colors were slightly different. There is a nice metal Berlin S-Bahn set that was only issued under Primex brand.

Early Primex models were very much simplified, but later ones were identical to equivalent Marklin models. In some cases, they were even an improvement on the original. For example, the Primex E44 has better pantographs than the original Marklin 3011 that it is based on, and the body does not have the unsightly oil holes.

Our member Florian has a very good website dedicated to the Primex range:

This site also shows photos of all the Primex models:

A couple of Primex catalogs can be downloaded - see post #111 in the following thread.

Thanks all, I did see some of the models on ebay. They looked comparible in quality to the ordinary Marklin line.

If you like analogue,Primex is a good starter line and as Ray says sometimes better than the original, its usually cheaper on ebay. It is detaied in the Kolls catalogues.
