I recently got my old 44 class steam engine back from conversion. I gave it the works, including sound. I noticed for the first time a "bell" sound. Actually is is more of a gong, one strike only.

Since I have noticed a bellcast on a number of my German locomotives, steam and diesel. I cannot recall ever hearing one anywhere in Europe. In North America we have bells that sound continously when locomotives are passing a level crossing, or entering a station. This is different, just one strike of the bell.

When do the German locomotives use the bell, and is it only one ring?

On the digital sound equipped steamers I have, the bell is constantly on until the function is turned off. Maybe it's an issue with decoder function mapping, that the bell sound is mapped as a momentary function instead of a toggle function?

As I understand the bell is used as a warning in station areas where pedestrians can cross the track, among other things... Others will surely know better...Wink

Hi!

I don't know if the BR 44 had a bell.

Branchline locos (e. g. BR 50, BR 03) had bells and sounded them on unsecured railroad chrossings.
Heavy locos (like BR 44, BR 01, BR 01.10) were running on main lines only (too heavy for branchlines) and needed no bells as railroad crossings were secured.

I never heard that for Germany. But I can't speak for era III and earlier.
A train (e. g. when passing through a station) will blow the whistle to warn persons who are too close to the track.
Regards
Tom

In Holland simular bells were fitted to locos running on so called "lokaalspoorwegen" (lokalbahner/branchlines) where traffic was light and trains were anything but frequent.

I found this on sh1.org about signal Bü 5 "Lautetafel"

Läutetafel (Bell board): ring bell (läuten = ring) until train head has passed the level crossing.
As with the whistle board the board with the two black stripes may be used.

The latest "Year with Marklin" DVD, that came with my 06/2010 Insider package has a nice English film about German trains in the 1970's, including footage of a branchline class 75 with bell ringing continuously.
There is also footage of class 44s on mainline freight trains, but I don't remember any bell sound on that.

regards
Kimball
