I have a small Z scale layout and am not that familiar with 2-rail. If I want to isolate a passing track where one train can wait while another passes by (controlled by the one transformer) what is the best way to isolate the passing track? The passing track has a turnout at each end so a train can enter and exit.
Thanks, Maurice.

Hi Maurice,
This is effectively a shadow station, I think, and is something I use on my layout.
How I achieve this is quite simple, using two circuit tracks and a relay. Each passing section should have an isolated portion located a bit after the circuit track and long enough to allow a loco to stop in it. Too short and the loco - with enough momentum - may overshoot and cause a crash.
Basically, as an incoming loco operates the circuit track, this operates the relay to isolate the section this is approaching, causing it to stop, whilst activating the isolated section on the other track causing the loco waiting there. The relay would be wired up in parallel to the switch to make sure the incoming train is directed to the empty track. You could also add signals at some stage.
There is something you need to be aware of, though. You will need to use the 8945 relay unless you've got a 16V transformer. There are alternative relays, but I prefer to use Maerklin's own.
This is really simple with twin tracks, but can get more complicated with more. |

Z Scale is great - where's me glasses? |

Thanks Nightowl. Will try your suggestion as have those parts in a bulk purchase I made a few years ago from someone who was changing to HO. I am only looking at twin tracks so this would suit my needs. Thanks, Maurice.
