SBB-CFF-FFS Ae 8/14 11801

Historical Highlights
In the late Twenties of the last century, the Swiss Federal Railways made a number of studies in order to improve the service on the famous St. Gotthard line, and generally on the section stretching from Lucerne to Chiasso.
They found out that the works to be implemented in order to fit out multiple controls on the Ae 4/7 locomotives, which were in use at the time, would have been extremely complicated and expensive. They also believed it was not very convenient to split pairs of locomotives at the end of mountain sections.
Further evidence confirmed that these manoeuvres were not significantly profitable; therefore pairs of locomotives could stay constantly coupled for the entire section.
These are the premises of the testing on the double locomotives of the Ae 8/14 type, which, at the time, were thought to avoid all problems related to the operation of multiple control devices, allowing at the same time to have other substantial benefits, such as getting rid of two driver’s cabs and all the related expensive and heavy devices.
In February 1929 a tender was called and the following May twenty bids were made.
The machines, estimated to have a maximum speed of 62mph, were required to haul, on 27‰ gradient ramps, either 600 tons heavy fast passenger trains running at a speed of 38mph, or 750 tons heavy goods trains at a speed of 31mph.
Two projects were chosen and the related prototypes were built.
The project no.5 by SLM (Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik) in Winterthur, requiring the “Universal” gearing, would originate the units 11851 and 11852.
The 11801 locomotive, which we reproduced, derives from project no.6, presented by BBC (Brown, Boveri & Cie.), which project included the use of the well-known Buchli drive system, already used in Ae 3/6¹, Ae 4/7 and other export machines.
Commissioned in December 1931, and initially assigned to the depot of Erstfeld, where it then came back permanently, the 11801 locomotive was assigned for a short period of time to the depot of Bellinzona, in order to be used on the ramps of Mount Ceneri, between Bellinzona and Rivera.
Immediately operated to haul the heavy freight traffic in the demanding St. Gotthard ramps, for many years it also hauled prestigious fast trains running between Lucerne and Chiasso.
The locomotive operated until 1976 and was permanently withdrawn from service in May 1977. The 11801 locomotive was officially declared of historic interest in 1981, when it had already covered over 3.600.000 miles of distance, and it is today carefully maintained by the staff of the Erstfeld depot.
The experience gained by operating the Ae 8/14 prototypes, as well as the improvement of the equipments for multiple controls, made the project soon obsolete and these huge machines never reached the stage of mass production.
For its unparalleled power, the Ae 8/14 11801 was known for many years as the most powerful electric locomotive in the world, and for its 246 tons heavy body it still remains the heaviest locomotive ever owned by the Swiss Federal Railways.
This is why we like to think of it as the “Big Boy” of the Swiss Federal Railways.

The Model
This extra limited edition was produced by highly experienced master craftsmen, using brass and steel only.
Adhering to the production techniques used for the most prestigious brass super models, innovative options were applied which may lead the way.
This model is offered in three different versions:

032.10.0001.01.2 original conditions, 1931, four pantographs, dark green livery
032.10.0001.02.3 ca. 1960, two pantographs, light green livery
032.10.0001.03.5 current conditions, three pantographs, dark green livery

1:32
This locomotive, which no one had dared reproduce in Gauge 1 before, due to the complexity and costs of the project, even required the production of a special digital decoder. For our Ae 8/14, ESU designed their currently most powerful decoder.
The same decoder controls the complete range of sounds in this machine, boosting its operation.
The perfectly reproduced pantographs are also controlled by the digital system; an almost invisible mechanism controls the operation of each individual pantograph.
The final model will feature characteristics which we do not want to reveal yet. We would just like to anticipate that it will be, we believe, the very first model featuring a USB connector for … Guess for what!

I agree a stunning piece of machinery. The level of detail is just amazing, which is easier to obtain with scale I than HO I admit, but still it is an amazing feat.

Kind regards,
Guus
