Do you remember Faller AMS ?

I was thinking back to this first Faller Car System concept.
When I was young, I was dreaming having one - with a Marklin layout of course.
But I never have one.

This concept was heritated from an american slot cars company.

Maybe someome in this forum have one ?

I have found by chance those interesting links:

or embedded:

And these web links:

I had a layout with Faller AMS. Or to be correct my brother and I had it in our parent's house. At the time there were always problems with oxidized current "rails" and I don't know if it works at all anymore. The layout is still around since my brother and his wife at a point bought the house from our mother.

The Faller AMS part has two level crossings with a double track line and it was quite often that we had accidents at the crossings. Another point was that we had it set up to allow driving of two cars in each direction and it just was too much, even if the train part was fully automated and could handle five trains at the same time, with only two persons it turned out to be impossible to drive two cars, check that none of the trains dropped coaches or wagons or derailed. The latter due to the fact that at some places the track (and the layout support structure) was in poor condition or inadequate.

Yes. It was not a very good concept though as I also experienced much problems with power, sliders, motors. I think I sold the lot to a friend who had more of it and changed to Marklin Sprint myself. Still have that in running order, M* Sprint was a much better slot racing system even if it deviated from standard slot racing systems (M* design ofcourse, who else?). With two other friends we sometimes created a huge trackThumpUp Razz

The track was very reminiscent of Aurora race car Sets. I remember seeing the polizei car with the flashing lights and wanting that for our Aurora Set. We never did combine any moving cars with our Maerklin, but I remember seeing a complete layout in one of the toy stores when I was in Europe and thinking how cool it was. They had some kind of control system that stopped the cars when the train was coming.

The Faller made AMS from 1963 until 1980.

Surely you must have come across Steve Cook's website. Steve is now living in Melbourne, Australia, but is still a member of our Marklin Club, and we hope he will return to NZ sometime.

Anyway, one of his interests is Faller AMS.

I still have a box of many track/road items and bits and pieces back in SA somewhere. As kids we had a great time with AMS and M track - with many a crash at the intersections.Scared . I still recall the strange smell of the little car controllers and funny rectifier box(can be seen in the video), when they were used for long periods and got hot.... Good old daysThumpUp

Hi Juhan.
I was particularly dreaming of the level crossings and especially the cars climbing on the freight wagons.

Hi
Thank you for your reply.
So It was less reliable than expected. You report also the difficulties to control at the crossings.
One of the problems was certainly to be the excessive speed of the cars

Thank you for your information, Steventrain.

But I am not sure it was compatible with our Marklin tracks...

Thanks for your reply Mike.
Do you know if Aurora slot cars tracks an controller, were more reliable than Faller ones?
I also think now the solution to avoid crashes at the level crossings was to implement a security section where current is cut when the train is coming. It looks like it was a homemade solution for the shop.

Also thanks for the link.

It's also said that Faller AMS is hard to maintain alive.
So Faller has turn the page with the new Car System...

Hi you're right. This fire is really awful.
Was this an optical illusion?
It did not seem to damage the freight car and all the plastics around.
Though the glue is flammable.
Something I will never do on my layout.
No more than the nice and common real-water mill at the middle of the video.
Though it seems less dangerous,I already have had to save my M-tracks from rust
only because of the air extractor of the house was stopped for a month,
and maybe also the presence of chemicals in a dries-in-the-air plasticine
I've tried to use on my layout.

Bonjour Joël,

if one clicks right with the mouse onto your video there is an option to watch it on Youtube. The German commentators also ask about the fire and the user tells them that they used crumpled up tin foil, a lot I presume, so that the car was not damaged.

Many regards,

Hans

I'll try to open another thread about Marklin Sprint

Not to sound overly lazy, but can somebody direct me to a site where the mechanics of the Märklin Sprint cars are shown and explained?
-I especially think about the descriptions they have in the old catalogs of "mechanical cludge" and "automatic 2-speed transmission". (If memory serves me right)
TIA if any luck!

Hello Henrik,

I'm not sure but maybe this site could be of a little help ?? Maybe the owner could provide the necessary information if you asked him ??
