I need some help with special tools for repairing Marklin locomotives. In particular I need a wheel quartering tool for Marklin steam and electric locos with side cranks. This is to align the drive wheels exactly at a 90 degrees displacement to each other. I know many people just use the eye to do this job but in practise a precise engineering tool is required.
One quartering tool version listed on the internet uses a clear prism with a cat’s hair in the optical piece to align the wheels. The wheels are then finished off with a press tool so they go together straight. There seem to be a number of dies for each of the Marklin wheel types. Thus I also I need this press tool for putting the wheels back on again as well.
Does anyone know where these tools are available or could recommend a supplier?
I have emailed a German firm called Fohrmann in Gorlitz but as yet have had no reply after a week.
Cheers

Bryan Hi Bryan, I've been using the tools from Fohrmann for some years now. They do the job alright, but it does take a little practice to get to use them properly (especially the quartering tool). Be cautious if you're considering the NWSL quartering tool - I stand to be corrected, but I don't think you could use that one while the wheel sets are mounted on the loco, so it would make it virtually useless for most marklin locos where there's no bottom wheel retainer plate, and you need to thread the axle through the chassis frame. cheers
