Hi All,

I am pleased to report that Maerklin is still operating the exchange program for old transformers! Maerklin sells a new transformer (for example no. 6647 for 230 V) for 49.95 € + shipping costs, if you send them your old transformer. You would need to mention the voltage specification in your country.

I am happy about this exchange program. I shall be quickly getting rid of my antique blue transformers for a spanking new one. The question I have for all of you is: which new transformer should I go for?

Cheers,
Ranjit

I am sorry, but I am not sure about that, Ralph. It might be. I got an e-mail directly from Maerklin Germany. Why don't you check if Maerklin USA has the same program?

Cheers,
Ranjit

what was the reason for the exchange program? Fire hazard?

The reason is that the new transformers eliminate the risk of back-transforming from low to high voltage if connected wrong, if i'm right. No risk of fire whatsoever.

Some transformers have a problem with the insulation (risk of electric shock).

Back-transformation is no problem with the latest 6647 transformers.

Blue transformers can kill current decoders.

BTW: I can buy a new 6647 for 50 Euro without returning an old one.

Tom

I'm not sure if I understand that question correctly.

If you need an adjustable transformer: there should be only one for your mains voltage (6646, 6647, 6645).
Only 6647 is on green light.

If you want to run digital you can go for a non-adjustable transformer with more VAs (should be the same price).

Search 6647 on google.de:

Hi Tom,
You say

I think Märklin have a concerted program to rid the world of old blue transformers - individuals still offer them on eBay unfortunately, even though they do not conform to current European standards etc.

I recently sent two blue transformers to Märklin for exchange, and promptly received back two of the 6647. They will always be useful for lights and accesssories.

Kimball

I have no doubt this works fine.

When they announced the transformer exchange program, they accepted ANY transformer. I don't know if they still do.

The RRP for the transformers is ridiculously high (109,95 Euro for a 6647).
The RRP for the startset 29165 is 109,00 Euro (and a 6647 is included).
The RRP for the startset 29145 is 99,00 Euro (and a 6647 is included).

I spent 50 Euro for my last 6647 (it came with a DHG 500 loco, 3 freight cars and a C track oval).
That was a few years ago and those startsets are now difficult to find. But you can still get the transformer for 50 Euro or less.

Why pay postage to send a blue transformer to Märklin?
Regards
Tom

The fact that the blue transformers do not meet current EU rules does not mean they are dangerous, unless you are really stupid about how you use them.

In fact they are just as useful as they always were, and they can be used with analogue locos and older digital and delta locos quite freely without any problems. They can also be used for powering lighting circuits and accessories.

As Tom says, if you need more white controllers spend your 50 euros on a 6647 from ebay and keep the blue one as well.

Hi Tom and Ray,

You are probably correct. It looks like I have done my bit in keeping the postal services In Australia and Germany in business! RollEyes
