I read in the latest Marklin Insider that a new decoder is coming out. This decoder will support all formats (incl. DCC)and will have characteristics such as control of the brightness of the lights.RollEyes

I wonder when ESU will reply with a better model BigGrin

This "new" decoder was already out last year...

It will support the format accordingly to the firmware (software) that is loaded into it...

Controlling the brightness of the lights have been possible with ESU decoder's for a long time...

Are we talking about a decoder which is already in locomotives which have been delivered, or a new one we haven't seen yet?

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

The decoder supports this already - and with a CS1 you can use that feature.
And with the new 03.10 this feature works correctly (while it doesn't work correctly with last years BR 23).
It always worked with the old ESU mfx decoders.

Tom

Märklin Magazine describes the new decoder called "Universalgenie" (universal genious).
They mention last years BR 23 as one loco with the new decoder.

Thanks Tom.

Is there any way of knowing which locos have this new decoder?

Several, depends on what you are using.

CU 6021, Intellibox, etc.:
Enter programming mode.
Trying to write to CV 80 will end the programming mode for ESU decoders (both MM and mfx), but not for Märklin decoders (both MM and mfx).

ESU decoders (both MM and mfx) support MOTOROLA 28.
Märklin mfx decoders support MOTOROLA 27; Märklin MM decoders support MOTOROLA 14 only.
Can be tested with ECoS and CS1 reloaded if M4 is disabled.

With ECoS and CS1 reloaded you can look at the decoder options: ESU mfx decoders support forward trim, reverse trim; Märklin mfx decoders don't (there might be other differences I ain't noticed yet).
Trimming can be used for steam locos (maximum speed in reverse is lower); some people regret that this option is no longer available.

No way to tell the decoder from the catalogue.
You can tell it by looking at the decoder, too.
