The article on teh ICE hitting a scaffy wagon reminded me of this collision in the UK.

and follow-up:

Some rural crossings in the uk have a notice instructing vehicle drivers to use the adjacent phone to contact the signal box to see if a train is due. Clearly, this driver thought he could get away with it without complying with the instruction.

Hi Chris,
That reminds me of the infamous level crossing smash in Hixon, middle England in 1968 - a horrific chain of events in which too many people, including the driver and observer, died.

Hi Kimball.

I was 15 when that happened and remember it well as I had a copy of the official report. Sadly, there has been a train (no pun) of accidents since then that nearly all can be put down to the road vehicle driver. Exceptions are a) the occasional failure of the crossing equipment and b) sun shining directly into the lights and for some reason (in car entertainment systems?) the audible warning not being heard. Sadly, in spite of all the media reports of similar accidents, violation of teh highway code in the UK is rife.

Best,
Chris.
