Marklin newbie here.. I was poking around the net and can't seem to find any decent sites to help me get familiar with how Marklin catenary works and what is needed to assemble a functional system. I did find a nice site for Z scale but nothing so far in H0. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thx

Hi Steve,

The best thing is to purchase a few posts and some of the wire and try it.

I have recently set up about 25 metres of the Märklin catenary system on C track, and will post a tutorial on my website. That will take at least a month. I found the system elegant and functional, though I have a few tips.

regards
Kimball

It depends on what type of catenary you are using. If you are using the newer type, there is a book published by Marklin describing how to install it. If you are using the older 7000 series catenary, then there is not a lot of printed information. Most of it is up to trial and error. You can study some of the track plans published by Marklin in their older catalogs, which show how Marklin set the catenary up. And there have been one or two threads on the forum here on how to set some aspects of the catenary system up.

cool, thanks guys. I don't have a marklin dealer nearby, so it's not as simple as paying the store a visit and check things out in person, so I guess maybe I'll look into one of those starter kits that have the basics in them and get a feel for things..

Do a search for Catenary, overhead wiring and in German: Oberleitung

Try to find the marklin 70000 cantenary starter set it has jigs and a guide book for installation.

This set is no longer available. Instead I went for the Viessmann starter set, which is compatible with the Marklin system, and slightly cheaper.

The 4101 set is intended for the Marklin 29785 ICE starter set, but will do for any of those sets bringing the same track configuration, or you can add to it for your own configuration.

It does not bring the jigs and alignment tools, but I found I didn't need them. The distance from the track and the height are correct when you use the supplied mountings cut at the right place (this is marked for the different track types). The distance between masts was calculated using a length of wire as a reference. The only measurement which was a bit more difficult was the position of the wire on the mast hanger, especially at curves, and I did these by trial and error using a loco with pantograph up moving slowly along that bit of track.

Here you can see how the mast fits on to the mounting plate, and how the wire clips on to the mast hanger:

Steve

I have a functional catenary for about 25 years, partly the old Märklin 7000 series, partly self made (copper wire soldered on copper screws which were screwed in wooden laths which were mounted on threaded rods).
Independent from the system you choose there some general remarks:
put all your E-locos on catenary, in the manuals you find out how;
solder a wire on your catenary for power supply, red box on your trafo, control unit or central system, brown thread on your rail for ground;
take as example your E loco with the smallest pantograph for installing masts and thread;
hang your catenary threads in a 'zig-zag' form, that prevents weary;
isolate your catenary at every signal for train stop by red light, each isolated section must be connected to your signal for power supply;
be careful at points!

Maybe you should start with second hand catenary, these are to find on well known sites (E bay and so on).
