The Marklin catalog is the most impressive train-related catalog I have ever seen. Being new to Marklin (in the last year) I am sure a lot of you have enjoyed this annual publication for many years. I have seen a lot of catalogs over the years from all sorts of train companies, there is something about the Marklin one that sets it apart.
One evident aspect is the photos. Are they just studio-type shots of little sections of a real layout, or dioramas assembled for the catalog? Does anyone know? As someone in publishing and photography, I can certainly appreaciate the artistic apsect of these photos of their models...and believe the way they show their trains is much more effective than the typical manner of just a model on a page surrounded by text. Just thought I would comment on how enjoyable the catalog is to look through...

Well, all the pictures which are posted in the catalogs over the last couple of years have been shot at some great layouts all across Germany. These are really huge layouts which are some sort of museums.
If you have the 2001 - 2002 catalog you can see that at the end of the catalog there are a number of 'advertisments'. On these layouts all the shots for the catalog are shot.

Hi Bill, all, Please remember that Märklin has a department that builds layout for exhibitions and most likely uses these also. There was a story in the *Insider* that for some of the Spur 1 photos they build dioramas and take these shots outside <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Unless they use some photo editing software, the manner in which they photograph some scenes against real backgrounds....such as the box cover of the Swiss starter set, is impressive. It seems there is a lot of thought and attention to detail that goes into their catalogs.

The photos of the layouts are always impressive. We have visited a few of the layouts featured and they are even more impressive "in the flesh".
The only thing that disappoints slightly in the catalogue is the photos of the models. Many of these are obviously retouched by computer.
At least they are not as bad as the Fleischmann photos. They seem to take a photo and then turn it into a kind of art......
