any one know this wagon? catalogue no.? the last digits are 1086 in the box, Oct 1986, but theres no number on the box at all.

This is one of the wagons you will find listed in Koll's Spezial Katalog i.e. a wagon produced for trade or advertising purposes. It's Koll's number is 88705, the 88 indicating the year of production. It's Marklin number, if it was ever given one would be of the form 4481.xxx, 4481 being the basic wagon on which it is based and the xxx being
the number of variations produced up to that point.
Koll's indicates that 500 were produced, the normal number for most of these productions. This does not mean it is particularly valuable. A price between £10 and £20 would be reasonable. While it is a special production, there are probably more than 5,000 special production wagons produced over the last thirty years so that in total they are quite common.

Thanx so much for that Bob, found it today at one of our ye olde toy museums - they have quite a number of M wagons (and lotsa M track pieces!)for sale; got it for about 8/9 Euro, along with a 4639, 3 x 4431, and a 4412,all in good nick, just very dirty wheels!
My freight stock is growing!
