I saw a 2nd hand loco for sale the other day, just briefly. The box it was in read 3309, and it looked like a 4-10-2, class 85?? I am not sure though. Can anyone shed some light on when such a loco was produced by Maerklin?

Hello Joe, According to the information I have (Koll's catalogue,) a 3309 is a BR85 with TELEX couplers on both sides and the loco has been produced from 1983 until 1985. |

My re-collection of a 3309 is a 2-10-2 with telex coupling, smokegenerator. John |

Thanx Guus and John; i can get one here in South Africa for about US$350/380. It seems in magnificent condition. Is that the going rate do you think? taking into account if I get it anywhere in Europe/USA, I will have to add hefty postage fees! thanx for the video clip John, your layout? Awesome loco I think - how exactly does the TELEX work? I believe you need to press twice on the transformer, does it then cancel out the reversing, and only operate the coupler? Thanx, Joe

Thanx, Joe I guess it would of been that way (pressing twice), mine is digital now but I remember it had an electronic reversing unit. John P.S. That is too much to ask for, more like US$ 200.00 or a 3709 (digital) http://cgi.ebay.de/Clix-...&hash=item5ad9378207 |

What type is the box? Window box with blue at both ends and bottom or white box? |

This is the 3309: Mine was made in 1986. The production time was according to Guus and the Märklin Archiv from 1983 to 1985, but the serial number on mine indicates 1986. I do not remember how the telex couplers was operated, as I rebuilt mine to digital many yeas ago. Probably as many other locomotives with telex, it's activated at every second direction change, after this sequence: forwards - forwards with telex - backwards - backwards with telex - forwards - and so on. 3309 had a electronically controlled mechanical reversing unit and tripple lamps in both ends, with constant brightness, 1,9 Volt bulbs, changing with the driving direction. 3309 came in a one-time plastic box, as shown in steventrain's link. Only 3308 and 3309 (both Br85) came in these boxes, which becomes very fragile over time. |

thanx Thomas - i just love the look and feel of this loco, so much so I went and bought it today. it is in superb condition, lovingly cared for by a M fanatic who has departed for the "great model railroad in the sky!" Hardly used, and the dealer has also purchased many more from his dear departed friend, so who knows what I may be looking at next?? The 85 runs like a dream, I must say the electronic reverser is a huge plus over the older type - no more jumping at the odd moment!! and the first loco I have with telex, what a pleasure to be able to uncouple wherever!! Thanks everyone for the help.....tonites gonna be a good nite.....

I have the 3308 (DRG Version without Telex) and when I ran it on my analog track in the 90:s I also thought the diode board helping the normal reversing relay was a great thing...
It's not really a full electronic reverser, just a helper.
Very smoothly running too...
That clear/blue box is fragile indeed.... |
