I´m just curious...

How much do you use your smoke generators?
<hr noshade size="1]
1. All the time! It´s wonderful to have four steamers puffing in a small compartment! wink
2. Sometimes when I feel like it
3. Only to impress guests [:o)]
4. A complete waste of money! [:0]
<hr noshade size="1]
I myself is a 2

Number 2 - usually for the kids (who absolutely love it).

There is a station close to where I am sitting at the layout. When a steamer stops there, I refill her. When she then runs out of fluid further down the lay-out, I don't bother filling her again. Unless indeed the kids demand me to...

So for me it's 2 also.

5. Never - since I don't own such item

Edit: Wrong answer from my side. It's only several hours later, and now I own one ...
Just received a brand new Steamer biggrin

How well ventilated the room will need to be when you use the smoke generator? And does it smell?

I don't own one, but I have always wondered if it would even be feasible to have one in an ordinary room.

1. All the time when I am trying to work out a tough quiz (usually the ones from my Swedish friends) posted on this website. When using it in this way always use the Premium Marklin Smoke Oil, the cheap stuff doesn't have a clue and you just end up with a headache. [^] wink

Adrian: My experience too, Pola´s oil got me sick for a week! ;)
Kimmo: No big problem... I have one steamer with smoke and it can run for 10 minutes in a 13m2 room without any serious health issues.. :) It would look pretty cool to see a steamer coming puffing out of your tunnel! (I have seen your layout) Well worth the cash involved!

I have more than 10 locs with a smoke generator. One is broken.
They are from Marklin and Seuthe. I don't use them at home. I don't want to pollute the railtrack..

But I use them on the layout of the club.biggrin

I'm building a new layout strictly era II-III steam and early diesel (no catenary). I'll run my smoke as much as I desire. (I uave four dampf-loks...just acquired a BR18 that is beautiful!)

True friendship! You think it's OK to pollute the railtrack of the club...

Just kidding - but does the track itself get polluted or is it just the surrounding air of the room? I don't have any smoke generators (because I have only 1 steam loco and it has a plastic body...) - but it's surely an interesting function to impress visitors.

For me the scent of the smoke is an essential factor in enjoying the hobby, as is the smell of soldering grease. In fact, sometimes, when I am fiddling around in a loc on the workbench, I have a steamer on a nearby station track exhausting the fumes...

Is the smoke generator synchronized with the speed of the loco?

No not if you drive digital. But the smoke generator does it works even when the loc stands still.

A smoke generator works or it doesnot work.

It is supposedly a 37184. I got it on eBay from a broken up starter set. Runs like a dream. Smooth and powerful. Had it pulling six coaches, some with sliders, without complaining. Haven't gotten the smoke generator working yet, though. Work keeps cutting into my train time. biggrin

You bet! Got mine on monday, really nice loco [:p]. Bought the complete set - needed that Control Unit - it was a steal: CU6021 + 60VA Transformer + 37184 Steamer + 3 Coaches + some C-track for €299.- only biggrin !!!
Some starter sets are REAL bargains [:p] (I know - M had to get rid of that CU's, just right for me)

1!!

My favorite locos are the steamers, they look great. I have 8 and 5 with smoke generators and use the marklin oil on them(20 years old), the smell is not so good but the result is wonderfull....
