Hi,

I've read many things in the past about TAMS decoders, most of them not being much encouraging (bad running characteristics, problems for programming them with a MS, erratic behaviour...).

This was mainly related to the "old" TAMS range from 3-4+ years ago (LD-G2, LD-G3, LD-W1, ...).

I am in need of purchasing some decoders for converting a new batch of locos (around 15 locos to be converted), and I've seen that, i.e. nowadays I can buy 2 TAMS LD-G-32 decoder for the price of a single UHL 76320, which is the decoder I usually use for the conversion of the "simple" locos (DC motor, only lights function). It seems that the performance/features of both are quite similar.

I'd like to receive some feedback related to the "new" TAMS decoder range.

What I need to know is that if these ones can be already programmed with a MS, and how do they work (running characteristics, load regulation, and so on). I'm quite happy with my 76320-converted locomotives (even with their "particular" programming procedure), but I don't need many features, and as I'm in need of converting many locomotives, the price difference x 15 is an important factor.

Any advices/opinions?

Many thanks.

Hi!

Recently I soldered a TAMS LD-G-32 into a Piko Taurus (replacing the factory installed Uhlenbrock $%&$%&$%&$%& Decoder).

The manual that came with the decoder doesn't show how to connect the decoder to a NEM plug (I swapped the two motor wires (which can be corrected using 3 CVs)).
The manual doesn't recommend load regulation settings for any kind of motor.
I use the default settings - much better than Uhlenbrock AnDi, but not really good.

I downloaded an older version of the LD-G-32 manual from the TAMS site.
I shows how to connect a NEM plug (I should have known that earlier).
It contains a table with load regulation parameters for various motor types including Piko. I tried the settings for the Piko motor and the result is best described as FUBAR.
It seems they re-designed the load regulation of the latest LD-G-32 so parameters from older versions can no longer be used.

One of these days I'll email Tams and ask for load regulation parameters for Piko motors.

Therefore it's too early to rate the decoder.

So far I use ESU decoders for my favourite locos and some Tams decoders for locos I don't value high.
Uhlenbrock decoders are only soldered out, not soldered in.

I cannot fully recommend the Tams LD-G-32 at this time. So if you're satisfied with that Uhlenbrock type ...
Programming with a Mobile Station should be easier with the Tams decoder (they recommend using #29750 from the database).
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom, and many thanks for your reply.

Is there a manual for the LD-G-32 decoder, in english, explaining the procedure that should be used in order to program it with a MS?

Probably I should know it, but what does "FUBAR" mean? (sorry for asking...but I have no idea on its meaning!).

Regarding the UHL decoder, I thing that the Piko Taurus uses some kind of cheapo UHL decoder (AnDi 75300, I think), which is really crappy. Other locos such as the SNCF 67400 have the 76320 factory fitted, which is a great improvement (in my opinion the 76320 is a good basic decoder that used to be cheap until now).

My concerns are that if the TAMS can not be programmed with a MS, then I can not purchase it, as my only "digital device" is a MS. From your reply I guess that nowadays TAMS decoder can be programmed by a MS, but then a programming procedure would be very helpful.

Thanks again.

Xavi.

They only tell to use #29750 from the database and do the programming as indicated in the MS manual.

Manual (German only):

Old manual:

FUBAR:

(FUBAR was a joke, the decoder didn't let blue smoke out, but I had to reset it.)
