Hey guys, guess it is a little late to be asking this but what the hell... I just purchased a CS1 offa ebay for $450. I have recently seen it go in the $200's, but then I have seen it disappear for about the same price I paid. Did I get taken behind the wood shed on this one or did I do ok? If I got hosed I guess I just chalk this one up to live-and-learn.
Thanks.

If I were you, I would have paid the extra money and gotten a 60214 which goes for around US$800.

Hi Vinnie,

Yes, I would also do the same as Gautham.

Btw, Welcome to the forum! Could you please update your profile with location information?

Cheers,
Ranjit

Did your CS1 include the v2.0.x update - software / hardware.

If it didn't, I would say you got taken for a ride, otherwise the price seems reasonable (approximately what we would pay for a 2nd hand CS1 here in NZ).

It has the v2 upgrade and everything with it. It was all still factory sealed when I got it, I mean all the connection bags. And stateside I would have had to just about double what I paid for this for the 60214... Cheapest I have seen it is $900 US. Even e-bay is like $850.

Hi, Vinnie,
If your CS has software 2.0.3, then you can get version 2.0.4 from the Märklin website and install it yourself.
2.0.4 allows to monitor the track current and AFAIK it contains some bug fixes.
Regards
Tom

And if you can't find v2.0.4 on Marklin's website, I have it saved on my PC somewhere.

Welcome to the forum, Vinnie.

The updated CS1 has in fact become an ESU Control Station, really nothing to do with Märklin anymore (they designed it for Märklin in the first place).

As you might know already the two companies couldn't come to terms, so Märklin designed a new one and again a new one and left their customers who already bought the CS1 somewhat in the dark, not to expect any development or bug fixes in the future. ThumbDown

Lucky for us who was stuck with the CS1, ESU released the update - at a price though - but rather pay that extra than end up with an unfinished product.
Mind you still the non-color screen. Huh

I'd say, use the 60212 for a while and see if it's good enough for your needs. It's not a bad controller, and far better than older controllers if you run only Märklin trains.

I myself have not seen the need of a CS2 (60213/60214) for myself so I use the CS1, even ordered an adapter cable for MS1 for it... When I get serious into building a layout, I'll review the options - To get the ESU upgrade kit, or to buy the latest controller from M. If I decide to go the CS2 way, the CS1 can still be used as a slave controller (if not ESU-upgraded).

The main thing is that it does what it is supposed to, and even if it doesn't have the color screen and fancy loco pictures the user interface is good enough for me. If you don't have a controller since earlier, I'd say it's a very good starting point for the dive into the digital ocean.

I've used the 6021 controller and Intellibox earlier, and I think the CS1 is better than those usabilitywise.

The price? I think it's fairly adequate, not a real bargain, nor a ripoff...

I don't think you did too bad. It is upgraded and will have lots of functionality. The CS2 would have cost you double and if you were to buy a 6021 with keyboards and memory you could easily spend $500 to get a decent setup. I personally would be very happy with what you bought and I am sure you will enjoy using it.

Cheers...

Where can I find that version 2.0.4 software? I think I will keep it Marklin-friendly, just in case I get the 60214 in the foreseeable future...

The 60214 is available at ajckids.com at US$799.99.
This dealer quite often has good prices.
