Like Tim, I would probably start over with 2R since there is so much more to choose from even though I've had better luck with 3R. You could buy a lot of 2R with 50K.

What a horrific thought! The collection would not be the big issue. The 10+ yrs into the current layout would be the real issue. As you can tell by that comment, I am not intending on moving!

Note I would replace as much of what I have with the same item.

I don't know.

Maybe I'd switch to gauge I.
Maybe I'd switch to gauge Z (good for long trains).

Maybe I'd stick with H0 - and buy the cream of the crop again (old or new).

I have been looking more and more at N. You can do a lot in a little space and it is not as tiny as Z. I just have some much money, time and effort invested in HOAC that I could not possibly change now unless there were a catastrophic event.

Hi,

In case I really lose my collection I'd be very very sorry. I think I have a few irreplaceable items.

I have voted "Replace everything you could, new for old?" but in fact it should be "none of the above". I collect models too, so "buying new for old" is not really an option. I think I would try to buy the models I have now.

If you where to replace the old trains with other old trains you would probably have to pay more than what you got from the ensurance.

Those were my thoughts exactely! N has a good range of european cars with Trix and Fleishmann in front. They make almost everything I like.

After I finished crying I would start buying Marklin trains again, but not necessarily the same ones I had. Some of my locos are pretty irreplaceable, and many of them are hard to find new or second hand.

I settled on Marklin after trying out other gauges and other brands, so I would not be tempted to change gauge or track system.

I would sell my wife's stuff and collect my insurance on it and use the money to buy a new and bigger collection..... I replaced most of my HO layout two years ago when I converted to Digital. The only thing I kept were some of my unique cars. At first it felt weird selling my analog trains but once I had the digital up and running I was hooked. Now of course the labor into building structures and working on the layout is priceless. I would have to take a nice long vacation where I focused on Marklin 100%. I'd focus on a small collection of favorite items, and patiently wait for the "right ones" appearing as new items or on ebay for years to come... Would be more "picky" about what to get...

Would not change gauge, nor system - would just want to run trains, probably with more appreciation than before since a few are more than enough...

Don't have so many anyway now either so it wouldn't be a big change... Wink

I voted for replace all by new.
But that is not entirely true.
If everything should disappear (a real disaster), I probably would think about an othert era, other lay-out and so on.
So I surely will make a restart, but also will consider other options. And there will be models I won't replace.

Hmm, this has provoked a few comments! Surprisingly some of you would even change hobbies, yet none (so far) would swap Z for HO or vice versa.

This will run for 14 days, so let's see how it goes.

Although I voted replace all for new.

In reality I'd probably be more selective and focus on fewer contries and epochs, but I guess my love for German, Austrian and Italian models would still be there and of course Swedish as well, creating an axis from north to south a few Danish may also sneek in there as well and with de-regulation more Norwegian engines are seen on Swedish tracks ....

Hello,

This is a scary but very timely subject for me. Last week I had a near catastrophe with an in-house flood. My wife got distracted and let a sink overflow. The water went through the floor into the game / train room below.

Fortunately all six trains on the table layout were missed by inches. All I had to do was dry a bunch of C-track with the hair dryer. Unfortunately, the 18C2C game (1830 genre railroad game covering entire US) was not so lucky. A complete loss :-( At least it is still in print! The worst part is I have been forced to dismantle the layout, as I have now deemed this location unsafe.

Concerning the poll ... Though I voted for "replace all with new", the reality is I would still try to replace all my old analog favorites from the used market.

Bye,
Rob

Hmmm, basically being interested in matters Swiss (railways with colour, culture & scenery ThumpUp ) if I had my time again I would most probably switch to HOm using Bemo rolling stock Blushing

While I do "love" my Marklin Wub I must admit I have previously considered the swap Blink

It depends if I was cut an insurance check for all of it. If insurance gave me a pay out, I'd do something else with the money as it would be a sizeable sum. I would still start over, just sticking exclusively to Bemo HOm. Nothing against Marklin or HO scale, there is just an end to the purchasing with Bemo- only so much rolling stock exists in real life. I love my Marklin to death, but sometimes I have to look at it all and say "what am I doing with this many trains? I can't run all of this" I love it, but it was all put into perspective when I moved houses last week!

If I wasn't cut a check, you bet I'll be starting over piece by piece!

Angry I would probably replace it with N scale (Mini Trix), it would definitely remain European in nature. I wouldn't like it, the smaller scale would open new possibilities, but the trade off would mean having to buy a good pair of glasses to enjoy my hobbyCursing.

Overall I would be very sad that a part of my life had goneSad

Have been in that situation when I put my whole collection into a hobby shop I tried to start up back in '88 (thinking once this shop is a screaming success I'll be able to replace it all with new and at wholesale price to boot).

Well, the shop lasted 12 months (actually to many indians and not enough chiefs). It affected me so badly ( I lost my beloved V200 that I got for my birthday in '58 - really was not thinking straight in '88 - mesmerised by being a hobby shop owner - dohh!!!!) that I couldn't get back into Marklin until I was coaxed back into the local club in '02.

Since then I have gradually replaced all my old stock (and even managed to buy back one of my Feldschlossen Bier wagons) and expanded it further. Of course it helps that you are older, saner and are earning more money and the kids have left home.

And my love for the V200 (and V300) has expanded that at last count I had five (with hopefully more to come)

So my answer - REPLACE - bugger the cost.

I will freely admit that I am a total Marklin lover and would never change over.

Yes, definitely. I would cut my numbers at least in half and stick to my era II theme. But would continue to search for some of the rarer items that I have and enjoy.

Luckily I don't like the "older" items made on the 50s and earlier.Cool

Whew, what a terrible thought!!! I could NEVER replace many of the items I managed to acquire. I have a couple things the Marklin Museum didn't even have. If the Insurance would pay off for replacement value (I think that's what they say they'd do) I'd have a tough decision. Too old to even start trying to replace the good stuff. And the new stuff is not up to Marklins old standards. I guess I'd look for a few favorites that I know run great, build a couple nice consists and buy a porsche Panamera with the remainder.
Lets hope that this doesn't happen! To ANY of us.

Or I'd switch to Z scale to make a large micro layout with long trains and nice scenery with high mountains and forests...

but I love 3 rails so much. I'm sure I'll never make 2 rails in HO . My first motive in doing HO scale is 3 rails and Marklin global concept.
