Hi,

I need some pieces of "window" material for a V200.

The type of material should be similar to the one in the picture:

UserPostedImage

It should have a rough side (for the translucent effect) and a flat side.

This is the type of material used for early Märklin loco windows (such as V200 3021, some 3048, and others).

Any ideas on where to source this material from?

Thanks for your ideas!

I know this isnt exactly the material you asked for but what came to my mind is overhead transparency paper. The thicker type used in m3 overhead machines. Maybe you could use "spray glue" (I don't know the name in english) to join two sheets of the transparency paper. The glue will then form a the "look" you are requesting. I have done this to several locomotives and it works like a charm!

Just an idea..

Children's toys often come in boxes that have a transparent plastic "window" to show the product. I always keep some for this very purpose.

Many thanks for your ideas.

Richard, I had thought about that option, but material should not be transparent, but translucent, or whatever it's called in english...maybe the transparent plastic can be combined with some onionskin paper to give it the translucent effect. I'll give it a try and show the results.

Thanks again.

Hi

I would go along with the idea of looking through packing materials and looking for the correct type. I have tried the following idea to get the correct frosting:

I find that in shirt packing , they use quite a good form to make the collar stand correctly. This is great but it does not have the frosting so I have tried two approaches

1) I lightly sand one side with fine sand paper.

2) Some model glues will frost the plastic when applied, so I find a glue that does ( Many model building cements work) I take a cotton wool bud and work the glue across the rear side of the plastic. It is important to regulate the amount of glue. Enough to make the but move freely but not too much to form blobs.

Hope this helps

Greetings! I have used the spare "windows" from Faller, or Pola, or Vollmer building kit's.

Many thanks banco & spitzenklasse!

As Richard said as well, I cut some plastic pieces from a large blister. It's transparent, but the "light sanding" seems a good idea. However, I tried to glaze the material, first with alcohol (no success) and then with some nail polish remover I borrowed from FD. Honestly I expected this one to work, but it didn't either.

I'll try to find some fine sandpaper.

Thanks.

Great news:

Maerklin is rereleasing this classic model this year under the number 30210. You should be able to order the replacement window panels by ordering the spare parts from the reproduction.

Hi Mike,

I noticed that, what was a great surprise to me (check also the page 40 and the tinplate coaches !!!!!!!!!). In fact, the model I am looking the parts for is not the Märklin 3021 but a die-cast Fleischmann model, and therefore the window panels are slightly different in size. But that 30210 model is great news, as you say.

I have made both clear and translucent windows this way:

Clear windows:
Cut clear plastic, for instance from the plastic lid from Märklin digital conversion sets, to fit in the locomotive.
An example is my 3044, which originally has translucent windows. I removed them and cut out the same shape from the clear plastic.

Translucent windows:
Also in this case I cut clear plastic, and cover one side with 3M Scotch Magic translucent tape. Then you have translucent windows with one frosty side and one shiny side. Free choise which side to face outwards.

The shiny side facing outwards, see front windows:

The tape:

Svein, your solution is just perfect. Easy & cheap. Thanks so much. If you don't mind, I'll show it in the blog along with some pictures.

My V200 finally has new windows:
