Hi,

I've just purchased a wagen on ebay.de and the seller has provided an IBAN account number for bank deposit. Is there an easy english internet site or mechanism for transferring funds into and IBAN account ?

For bank transfers i think the easy way is to go to your local bank office.
Perhaps you could make that the seller accept a money order instead?

IBAN is just an internationally agreed code for how to describe any bank account, in any country. So the seller wants you to make a transfer to his (or her? :-)) normal account; the IBAN number is just a way of referring to it that should be recognisable by any bank.

So Francisco is right, go to your local bank branch and let them sort it.

You'll need this IBAN number to make a money transfer at minimum ( read almost local national) transfer charge!

Nowadays, I'm paying for all my ebay purchases using IBAN. This means International Bank Account Number.

To complete an international transfer, your bank may ask for the following:

Account holder name;
The bank's name and address;
IBAN;
SWIFT code;
BLZ code.

Thankfully, I have homebanking which permits international transfers, so I do all this at the confort of home, and, within Europe, it costs 75 cents each transfer and is available in the seller's account within two working days..... Very nice indeed....

The banks do their best to make international money transfers difficult. I recently did one from NZ to Germany that failed, neither my bank nor the sellers/recipients bank told us. 3 weeks later the seller made enquiries as to where the money was !

Yes you do have to go to your local bank. Make sure that they are experienced in these transfers and know what they are doing... make sure you have the type of bank account numbers details suitable for an international transfer, I didn't as it turned out.

Also you have to send enough money to cover fees at the other end else the seller / recipient of the money will end up with less money than required. All up it can be a unpredictable and expensive transaction, but if you get a good person at the bank hopefully that will make the difference.

It is good to see PAYPAL making inroads into Germany.

For future reference, SWIFT works better from Australian banks. However, it also means that not all overseas banks can be accessed (or maybe are not recognised) by an Australian bank.

Overseas bank transfers are VERY expensive, especially when the seller asks you to cover their costs as well. Therefore they are better suited to high value transactions.

Most sellers in US are registered with PayPal, so no problem.

My German co-workers say that bank-to-bank transfers in EU are easy and free. This is great if you are in EUbiggrin, but banks here in US are not part of the EU network, and they have a heavy charge for direct transfers[:(][:(].

When brousing for items on eBay.de, I turn on the payPal filter to show only items sold by sellers registered with PayPal. (If I cannot see it, I have less frustration when I cannot pay for it.[:p]) From my experience most sellers without PayPal expect to sell within DE or EU.

On the other hand, I bought something this week and paid for it with PayPal, but I am not sure if the seller used PayPal. eBay/PayPal may have started to do IBAN transfers for you. Cick on PayNow and see if it works.[:o)]

Let me know if that works. It will open up many new opportunities...I generally stay away from eBay.de to avoid frustration.

PayPal <u>claims</u> that you can make a payment through PayPal to anyone with an e-mail address, whether or not they are registerd with PayPal. I don't know how that works and have never tried it. I don't know if additional charges to you apply in that case.

If you open eBay.com, there is a new section on the left for filters. If you click on "Show only PayPal", only sellers that accept paypal will show in the list. On eBay.de, the same button is in the same place. Check "Zahlungsmethode PayPal" and click on the button "Artikel anzeigen". Now as you search, anything you see you can pay with PayPal.

For the other, I clicked on "Pay Now". In the past, this send an e-mail to the seller asking for shipping and totals. To my surprise this time, it went to the PayPal payment process, so I tried it thinking the seller changed to accept PayPal. The payment went through and the item is in the mail next day.

As a kid, I remember seeing a magicial put a small wind-up Lok in a box, bash it with a hammer, and pour out a pile of parts.[xx(] I hope I never see that pile of parts again, as I do not have a magician to put the parts together again. (Except for Helmut at Curthel[:p])

The show only PayPal is not perfect and you will miss many opportunities...

Try Marklin +Paypal as a search string... You sometimes get "no paypal", but this is rare..(the addtion of -"no paypal" will fix this one..

Try the search and check the difference with the "show only Paypal" button..

With an IBAN account your bank charges are much lower within EU.

I guess I would want to know whether Ebay's fraud insurance covers payments when made by bank transfer. I learned the hard way that it will not cover items in which "cash in a registered envelope" is the method of payment.
