Hello,

I'm working on an article about the BR 45, real & Märklin models.

All the information I have (Wiki, Eisenbahn Journal, MIBA) indicates that the original boilers of the 1937 locomotives were changed in the 50s to more resistant ones ONLY in the units 45 010, 45 016, 45 019, 45 021 and 45 023.
Moreover the 2002 Märklin catalog and the database says that the 37450 equips the original boiler, when it is clear that is the new (4 domes).
Both Märklin models, 37,450 and 37452 (45 020 and 45 004), according to information cited never had new boilers.

Are both Märklin models unreal?

For reference you can see this photo taken from the number 7/1976 of Eisenbahn Journal:

On top the Liliput has the old boiler (3 domes) while the M + F has the new (4 domes), which as seen in the excelent picture of Frits Osterthun is similar to the Märklin model:

Is my information about BR 45 boilers incorrect?

The Eisenbahn-Journal Dampflok-Report says that 45 001 and 002 only had 1 sand dome while the following locos had 2 sand domes.

Both locos on your first pictures seem to have three domes.
The loco on top has one sand dome and two other domes - correct for 45 001 and 002 with old boiler.
The loco at the bottom has two sand domes and one other dome - correct for locos with new boiler.

The M* model has two sand domes and two other domes: correct for 45 003 and later with old boiler.

Your picture is from Eisenbahn-Journal 6/1977 (in 1976 only 6 issues of Eisenbahn-Journal were released).
The text clearly states that the mould made by Liliput can only be used for 45 001 and 002.
Regards
Tom

Shape of boiler on Marklin BR 45 004 seems to match the Bellingrodt photos of the prototype quite well. So it confirms that the M* model is prototypically correct.

Thanks for posting pictures of the new boiler....
It seems that a new mould would be required if Marklin should release a BR45 model with new boiler (means it may not happen in the near future).

I'm curious whether a BR 45 with the old boiler was ever rebuilt with Witte deflector and three headlights?

... and I think that BR 45 010 is a future potential insider model.
Now collecting C-Sine models.

Hello,

Well, my idea about number of domes was wrong, I admit that I have very hard difficulties reading german!
Also I was confused by the fact that from 45 003 the BR45 had two sandboxes.

Old boiler: 2 domes + 1 or 2 sandboxes
New boiler: 1 dome + 2 sandboxes.

O.K.

Best regards, (and happy Christmas)
