Hello everyone.

Just a quick question here.
I'm about to setup some catenary using the large cross spans (marklin no. 7017, 7016 with )
Thing is, the cross spans (7017, 7016) all have a little metal hook thingy on the sides apart from the 2 90 degree hook in pieces.
Now from what I can see, these little wire hooky things serve no purpose except to get in the way.
I wanted to double check here before I cut them of to see what they are used for.
Thanks.

These thingys are meant to secure in place the cross spans to the apropiate masts.

It doesn't make sense from where I'm sitting.
The cross mast is held in place just fine with the other 2 hooks.
I can't see how the wierd wavy hook is attatched in any way that benefits the installation...

Well, the two normal hooks secure the cross span very well in a "steady state". When your electric locos begin to run there is a big amount of vibrations in the whole catenary system and that can loose your spans with time.
Also you must think that these crosssapns have being made in this manner for over than 40 years (now discontinued), so the extra hook might have prove it useful.....

The only true way to set up catenary for the transfer table is to use cross-spans[:p]. The metal hook is very useful for stability. You NEED all the stability possible there[xx(]! After you see how hard it is to take apart, you will realize how usefull the hook isbiggrin.

well I snipped em off hopefully they will be ok.

I have the problem though that I can't plan my catenary.
Its a custom layout and I don't know what I'll need or if it will fit in...
are there any free catenary planners out there?

Well, there are catenary stencils, i could not find a software to plan it.
So, i have use the instructions on the catalogs and the sheet instructions that came with the mast as a basic source for know how.
After that some experimentation in the layout not securung the mast and it work very well. Not need to say that i have made many variations and the suggestions of the catalogs.
To buy the wire, just make a kind of logic guess and bought a lot of wire (before it was sold out) and i think i will be well supplied.
But if you get short of wires and it becomes unavailable, you can always use the wires of the electrotren catenary, it is equal to the old marklin.
