G'day to the Forum.

Being a novice I have absolutely no idea about what Z locos can and cannot do.

I'm looking at getting a Pacific and/or a Bo-Bo. What can they pull along the level? Does that depend on the number of axles of the wagons? Are wagons with bogies more hard work, or are they better on curves?

I'm currently designing a layout and I'm having in mind gradients of between 2 and 2.5% on the straights and 1% on 220mm radius curves.
Am I too ambitious or can I get away with more? Are grades on Z layouts a dumb idea? I guess these grades will limit the number of wagons a little loco will be able to haul.

I thank you for your wisdom and experience.

Jeff. Smile

I sometimes have problems running the loco in a straight level... In general (and compared to Märklin H0) Z locos are very sensitive to dirt on the tracks and grades - a problem common to other 2-rail DC systems as well. Later Z locos with current pickup from all wheels are better, and if you have traction on all axles as well you may get away with grades on the layout.

Always a good advice is to check before you build the layout. I'm planning a very small coffe table layout in Z scale (without grades...).
