I'm sorry if this subject has been gone over before but I have looked and not found all the answers I need. I am trying to ballast and weather M track. My particular questions are: can I ballast in between rails, and if so, what do I do about the middle?
I have seen some suggestions about weathering the middle of the track with an alcohol wash, but again, what about the 3rd rail?
Is it OK to paint, or chalk the two main rails?
So far I have ballasted up to the sides, but I can't figure out what to do with the middle and what can be down to the rails. Thanks to all in advance as I am an newbie

Hello applor,

I use Chuck's Karuah/Gosforth Mix Medium granularity.. See www.chucksballast.com.au They are based in Rankin Park in NSW...

thanks xxup.

Another question for you, do you 'build up' the base of your layout to the top of the ballast?
I noticed that Tigli does it on his layout, and was curious if you did it, and how you did it too (like use polyfilla? but that would make the board awfully heavy wouldn't it?).
You can see what I mean in any of his pictures, heres some examples:

I am going to do it that way. I think M track like that looks better than C track.

I think that the way the way tigli's ballast the M's is wonderful, i will do certainly the same, i have some ideas on how to do it, not building an entire frame, that will certainly add to much weight to the layout, when i have it done i will put some pictures to show the results.

I have the ballast level in the station area.. While I like what Tigli has done, I am concerned about the effort to maintain the older m-track turnouts. Some of my turnouts are around 30-40 years old. Already I have had to replace the springs on three of them; One turnout developed a short and had to be replaced.

Regarding what ballast to use: I use real sand from a beach, mixed with medium ground black pepper and a little bit of ground cardamom. A strange recipe, but it matches the M track very well. See http://www.bostream.nu/perz/lp_yard_s.jpg Since my layout isn't permanent I do not ballast up the edges of the tracks, but it is of course possible to do so. I do not think it is a good idea to fill it up with ballast all the way from the table. I think it is better to fill up with foam that you cover with putty and paint, and then just add a thin layer of ballast. It will not be so heavy that way and it will be easier to replace a section of track if needed.
