Hi!
Still aiming for the vintage layout. I got this tank engine and I'm pleased with the fact.
There was a problem but the dealer fixed it.
She's nice and heavy!

It's a very good loco! I have 3031 too. The most surprising thing is its weight compared to size... an high density loco.

You're lucky. It seems in very good conditions compared to its age!
Does it have the box?

If Märklin had an eighth wonder...it would be difficult to find out if it was 3031 or 3047 model.

It's incredible that so many things can be inside this little loco. Telex couplers are incredible.

Congatulations on its condition.
check out http://maerklin-back-on-track.blogspot.com if you like to see how old Märklin locos are brought back into life! (in spanish by the moment)

The old style Br81 is on my wishing list.

Very nice, FMS!
I do not agree fully with Stephen about the age. I would say it is from 1964-1971.
Before 1964 it had an additional lever to change the driving direction manually.
After 1971 it had a "DB" logo and the 81 004 printed on the cabin walls and 81 004 printed in both ends.
Best regards Svein, Norway

I have an early TM800 that I restored and fitted a Delta decoder to. Runs very sweetly when properly oiled and makes a great heavy shunter as it has a metal body and chassis. I replaced the original pickup skates with a modern-style slider from Eckert Engineering, so it can shuffle my TEE/IC/EC fleet around (with a suitable reach wagon as the old TM800 couplers won't work with modern close couplers). I have a TM on my layout at the moment pulling a branch line mixed goods consist. Works very well as long as you don't mind the "jump" of the 2 click reverser.
I would certainly recommend it as a sturdy workhorse.

The reverser in mine was completely dead. A pity as I'd have like to get it working in original form, but the Delta upgrade isn't visible from outside and makes it a lot more useful on a modern layout.

BR 81 is the best shunting engine ever made. 2-rail DC people still get amazed by the Telex coupling. Ours is actually a Primex 3196 we bought as never used from eBay for almost nothing.
We put a Lokpilot chip and Hamo magnet in it. It's runs great and is a pleasure to operate.

Juha

the 3031 was my first Marklin engine in 1959, 50 years later, the 81 has changed very much :

Might (or might not) be made in China, but it now has a smoother drive, invisble gears, and see-through cab. In my opinion the only negative is that they have left off the valve gear, but that was quite over-scale anyway.

Has anyone actually made comparative tests of the new vs. old Br81?

Without knowning so much of the old classic M* models, are we talking about the same loco throughout the topic?
Some pictures show 'D' while others show 'C' wheel arrangement.

Hello,

we are speaking about two engines, the TM 800 (C) and the 3031 (D).

TM800, also known after 1956 as 3004, is a model of the Br 80, 0-6-0, or C wheel arrangement.

3031 is a model of the Br81, with a 0-8-0, or D wheel arrangement. The 3031 was also available as a 3032 without Telex coupling.

Whereas the Br81 has been almost continuously available from either Marklin or Primex over the years, the Br80 disappeared in 1958. A much newer and better detailed model of the Br80 emerged 30 years later in 1988 as the 3304, and variations of it have been available on and off since then. There was also a Br80 produced under the Primex brand from 1985 under the number 3190, but this was a simple model actually based on the Marklin Br89, with the side tanks modified.

Very interesting. As a small boy I remember, my father was on a business trip to Germany (probably in the mid 1950's) and he brought back for me the smallest Märklin loco available - must have been the BR 80. But unfortunately we lived in an old flat in Copenhagen, where the Mains Voltage in the entire area was 220 VDC - not AC. So no play with that. Now I know that I should have stored it away for the future, but I didn't. [V] Several years went by before the 220 VDC was replaced by 220 VAC, but then the loco was long gone.
