I started a few months ago to play around track plans for the new home and posted some notes in this thread here.

Basically my goals (very challenging) are:
- long trains, as close as possible to the real consists. 6-7-8 cars passenger, 10-20 cars freight
- that means long stations (I have a list of consists ranging between 1.5 and 2.0 m)
- a terminal station for my many push-pull trains
- a second smaller station
- a double track mainline
- one or two freight loops
- a freight area with container terminal (future) and rola terminal
- small industrial siding
- as much as possible hidden station tracks

The room is my furnace room, approx. 6m by 4m but with doors and furnace A/C unit.

Here are my two most recent track plans. Both have the terminal station on the right, on an above level (+150-200).

In this first case, the second station is in the lower part and the freight terminal is above. The duble track mainline passes underneath the freight area. After the pass thru station, the mainline loops around (under the terminal station) and has four sidings for waiting trains. Two other loops are also included for (mainly) freight trains.

One of the loops goes also thru a spiral to a lower hidden station level

A further development, envisions a longer double track mainline, this time staying above the rest and 'looping' a couple of times around the layout. The pass thru station is now above and after it the 'passenger' line becomes single track and eventually either loops around or reaches the terminal station above.
Here there is only one 'freight' loop with a second one using part of the last 'passenger' track.

The hidden station level is reached as before and remains very similar

I like this last development, the passenger trains will travel several times in front of your eyes on the double main track (now much longer). The levels are, from high to low:
- terminal station +170
- freight area / second station +50
- hidden station - 250.

Thanks for your comments.

very ambitious! I like the angle of the section with the cutout to reach every thing, but not much room for scenery or roads. Do you plan to operate form the center or on the out side of the layout?

I like the fact that you will see the trains in different directions and angles while they are visible on the main track more in #2... The space is used more efficiently as I see it. As usual, there is always the problem with overpopulating the layout with tracks but I think #2 "looks better" - or at least more "flowing" that #1. It is hard to tell since you have to kind of envision it in 3D mentally...

Thank you for the comments.

I plan on building a city area on a movable part of the lay-out on rollers, specifically around the terminal station.

I most likely will put the main controls on the center but also a MS2 (when it comes out) outside, on the bottom.

I will post a 3d image soon.

The plan is to start working on this later this fall and will obviously keep you posted.
