Hi,

I'm a little fed up with my experiences with ETS and am looking for a German dealer that does mail order besides the ones listed in the links section (Lokshop etc) with really good prices? They also need to speak english. biggrin

Thanks

ETS are normally pretty good, but I do admit that they can take some time to answer emails.

I have used the following ebay Marklin dealers with good results:

johnvandamme
station500
lackylok
fettsau

I've also used another 'bricks and mortar' dealer, but I don't have the link at hand to post. Other people I know have used Lokshop, Modelbahn Kramme and a few others who escape my memory right now.

On Ebay, I like johnvandamme - very quick & accurate.
On the Internet, I use LokShop since they haven't failed me yet...

I haven't had very many problems with Schweickhardt. I wish that they would sometimes use stronger boxes and better packing materials, but I have yet to receive a box where the goods were damaged. When I did have a defective lok, they exchanged it. When that one had the same problem, they returned it to Roco. When it came back still not entirely fixed, they exchanged it against the purchase of another item.

I have had at least one shipping nightmare with a package from Lokshop. They replaced the item at no charge.

I think that it is important to remember that every shop has it's good and bad points. I guess that people stick with places where they have had good experiences and avoid those where they had problems.

I think that the best thing to do is to shop around. Find out whether you can get a VAT rebate (19%). I tend to order Swiss items from Switzerland, German items from Germany and other items from those countries, as they tend to have a better selection of special editions and such models.

Here are some of the dealers where I have had good experiences:

Germany
Schweickhardt (ETS) (Waiblingen)
Kramm
Huenerbein (Aachen) aka Huenerbein321 eBay
NeedfullToys eBay (BS Computer)
John Van Damme eBay
Station 500 eBay

Switzerland
Bercher und Sternlicht (Basel)
Barp-Tech (Modellbahn-Shop Winterthur)
Suter-Meggen (No English) (Meggen)
Buehler (Interlaken)
Zueri-Tech (Zuerich)
Roundhouse (Zuerich)

Belgium
Jocadis (Enghien)

Austria
Hagen (Vienna)
Memoba (Vienna)

Italy
Trenogheno
Tecnomodel-treni
Trenietreni

Hi,
this one is one of the Jim Knopf Stores (http://modellbahn-west.de)
That's where I place nearly 90% of my orders. Just ordered my Le Capitole set with themwink

Some of the others I placed orders as well, even when I was living in Ireland. MBS Fischer is pretty good and JohnVandamme is also very reliable and recommandable.

Thank you Mike for this "order form". It will be very useful for me.

Babelfish is a good tool but sometimes the translation is wrong... this is much better! Smile

I've had big troubles with Lokshop some years ago... I combined my order with a friend and he needed 24 DC wheels for the "rollende landstrasse". I don't remember the item number, but we told the right one. They sent 24 wheels for AC. I made a complaint and they sent only 12 wheels... and AC again!
I wrote them again and... instead of replacing the items they put me in a black list so I cannot order from lokshop now...[:(]

Hi,

I have used most of the German dealers mentioned such as ETS, Kramm, Lokshop, Modellzentrum Hildesheim & Matschke and never experienced any real unsolvable problems. Some are more expensive than others. I now mostly buy from one dealer and have build up a good two way relationship.

I was just about to order a couple of items from station500 on eBay when I noticed that 19% VAT would be added to the price. So, no sale. If buying through eBay, be aware that the 'VAT must be included in the price' rule applicable to the UK does NOT apply to German sites. Some sites do, some don't.

Lately I have started using EuroModeTrains (www.euromodeltrains.com) for most of my orders, however when I do order from Germany I use either the LokShop or ETS, depending on who has what in stock and the delivered cost. I have had very few problems with either and those problem were solved quickly and efficiently. I like the LokShop's order update emails and also their new web site with order status.

I can recommend Bercher und Sternlicht in Switzerland and Modellbahn-Pietsch in Berlin and Matschke in Wuppertal.

Lokshop is good also.

This is a very interesting topic. I browsed through some of the dealers mentioned above, and I noticed that their prices (even in Euros) are much cheaper that what you see here in the US or Canada. What exactly has your experience been when they ship items from Europe to the US? What kind of service do you select (premium, economy)? Are the items usually well-packed? How about customs inspection on arrival? Are there any customs levied on these items?

And most important: if one item turns out to be defective, I understand it would be necessary to ship it back to Europe for repairs/replacement, as the warranty will not be valid in the US.

Thanks,
Best regards,
Armando García

I now only use Lokshop - although there are a few add-on costs, all in all I have never had a probelm with them over the past 6 odd years and I have placed many orders.wink
I also use modellbahnecke.de at Hildesheim. They often have some really good specials - and good efficent service.

Can't really be bothered with the rest - Unfortunately I had a bad expereince with ETS with a large order and in error they put the wrong address., but they fixed it all pretty well after about a year of "discussion" - so good for them, - I also like the stock they have of the older stuff - some nice one gauge specials are tempting.....

Station500 lists some items on eBay.de (VAT included) and other items on eBay.com (VAT Removed). For buyers within the EEC, on items listed
on eBay.com, the applicable taxes must be added.

Armando,

when you buy an item in Europe for let's say 238 Euros. The dealer may remove the VAT (19%). Conveniently, that would mean that the Export price works out to exactly 200 Euros. Add to that up to 40 Euros for shipping and the total works out to 240 Euros. When you work out the exchange (let's say 1.35) it works out to US$324.
The same item from a US dealer will normally cost between $350 and $425. If you have to return the item overseas due to a problem, some dealers will credit the return shipment, but it may cost you another $25-40. Buying in North America gives you the right to return to the dealer for warranty/problems. At least Maerklin has a corporate presence in the USA, unlike Roco and many other companies where there is an independent distributor.
Marklin USA has provided assistance to me on product bought either overseas or from US dealers who bought directly from the factory. They will not service items bought on eBay.

I generally shop around and if there is not a big difference or if I am only looking for one or two items, I am more likely to buy from a US dealer. If i have an order of 3-5 items, then the shipping from Europe makes it a definite deal.

The end decision is completely up to each person. I will never pay $499 for a lok that lists at 220 Euros. That is highway robbery, official distributor or not.

I have to say Matthias (Station500) has consistently been the best to me, purchasing on and off ebay. I have never has a screw up, and I feel alot of this has to do with his knowledge of the english language and understanding. It may be a few bucks more and he may not carry some other brands, but if I buy overseas its him 90% of the time now.

Armando:

I use Premium service normally. It usually costs 10Euro more from the lokshop but the difference is between 1 week and 3-4 weeks delivery.

I note that Herr Baer (LokShop) now has reduced shipping cost on orders over 100 Euros (not too hard a threshold to reach).

Model trains are exempt from US customs, so no worry there.

LokShop can display the prices with or without VAT for you, and in any currency you desire based on the current exchange rate.

Items from LokShop are always very well packaged. ETS is a little skimpier on packaging but I have never had a problem with damage.

I have had only one or two defective items, and they have always been replaced quickly.

I have bought a few items from Station500 on eBay, but never in a direct transaction. Matthias also gives good service, quick shipment, and good packaging. I have never had a problem so I don't have experience with him on returns.

I have never had any issue in shipments from the German or Swiss model stores that I have purchased items from. I am in agreement with Mike C, that sometimes it is cheaper to buy the loco or train-set from Germany/Switzerland with the shipping costs added than to buy it directly from a US dealer. The advantage of buying from a US dealer is when you have problems the return shipping is much less. However, since all new items are covered under Maerklin's or TRIX's warranties you can always send them back to Maerklin, USA with check for $35.00 to cover return costs for the replaced/repaired item.

Back on this topic:
Just for fun, I was comparing prices between some stores in Germany and some dealers here in North America for the new V-300 diesel locomotive 39300, which I want to acquire. There is a difference of almost USD 100 in price, and in some cases even more! I guess the choice would be obvious in this case.

Like many in the US all my shopping is done sight unseen. I have bought from the US and from Germany...depends on many factors.

In the US I have bought from AJCkids, euromodeltrains and RJFtrains. I can recommend them all. I also bought from SunbirdTrainMart...not as good but they do have a big selection.

Germany, I have bought from Kramm, Walter Licht (www.modellbahnen-licht.de), Lokshop, ETS, scheufele-modellbau (www.scheufele-modellbau.de) and Station500 (got my croc from him...you always remember your croc). Language issues become more of a problem sometimes, but I would buy from all of them again.

Now that is a mix of dealers but that reflects that I have not typically pre-ordered and have bought models from a few (3-5 or so) years ago and try to minimize shipping.

I am buying sight unseen so I take all that into account as part of doing business. And that includes warranty issues too. I imagine buying Lionel in Germany the roles are reversed.
