I have been using XTrkCAD to design this layout, which is a Z adaptation of Marlin's M track HO layout#27 in their 0700 book. The HO layout is at the end of this post. (I have investigated MTL Z for this same plan but am not posting that version here.)

The green diagonal represents the highest portion of an elevated section. Unfortunately, I was unable to duplicate the three parallel track sections in the lower center of the HO layout. Doubleslip turnouts and flex track are not used - at some point, I think I will have to become familiar with using flex track.

XTrkCAD issue --- The use of 8505 sections where possible rather than 8500 made it much more difficult to connect, for example the outer loop as it was being laid down. With 8500, tiny gaps could be "connected" by XT... Apparently, the gap distance & angle that can be "connected" is a function of the number of track pieces.

Below is the HO plan

Rowan,

I'm probably not going to go into Z. I started setting up my old M track and think I will stay with it. My main concern with Z is that I would have too much trouble working with it and I didn't want to spend money on a starter set only to find it too delicate & demanding for my motor skills. Unfortunately, I don't know of any people with z gauge layouts - or hobby stores selling Z stuff - anywhere near where I live (SW Colorado) so I don't have the opportunity to "see & feel it".
