This is awesome.

Back in the '60s, Märklin would sell complete lay-outs to retailers, so they could set up the lay-out in the shopwindow and attrack buyers. The son of such a shop owner inherited the lay-out. He kept it hanging from the ceiling in his kitchen for many years. Then it ended up in a warehouse.

In the end, he offered the lay-out to the Dutch model railroad museum. They restored it in perfect condition and now it is a top attraction (I'm heading there to see the lay-out in the coming weeks).

Here's a YouTube clip from the Dutch TV news about this lay-out.

A lay-out like this is exactly why I am into old Märklin.

Great to see that a layout such as those that I have seen at hobbyshops during my childhood has been saved.

It is still one of my dreams to build one day a M-Track layout like the one wished about 35 years ago now. wink

Nice to see another layout being saved from destruction.
That's what Peter Berg and his colleagues are doing in Gaggenau in Germany.
Every year they present these layouts at an exhibition in the Unimog Museum Gaggenau.
Here are some layouts from a smaller exhibiton at the Gaggenau Jahn Sporthalle from November this year.
I can tell you that these events are worth going there.
I'll be there second weekend in February 2009.
But here now some pics from Peter's website.

Good to see a surviving layout - I read an article recently about restoring a similar Hornby Dublo layout that appeared to have been part of a shop counter. It had a glass top and front to protect the models from wandering fingers.

We have an M track layout that was donated to our Marklin Club, after being used for many years as a shop display layout. I remember looking at 'Kleinbahn' as a kid, little did I know I would get to work on it in later years!

The rails used in this lay-out are quite worn - it has obviously seen extensive use over the years, but everything still works perfect. It was great to see this piece of Märklin history in full operation!

Seeing these layouts makes me think about the dealer layout that a local department store
had on display in the early to mid 1980s, I have always wondered what happened to it
(quite likey still in storage I hope).

It was two levels full analogue and controlled by signals.

I should one day ask the lady out the checkout about it.

I love these layouts.. I ordered the old M-track layout book before Christmas with the intention of making a small upstairs layout for something that I suspect might happen tomorrow... Anyway the guy bolted to Florida for Christmas and it does not look like I will see it until the US spring - if ever.. Oh well easy come - easy go..

Oscar, thanks again.
Adrian, Pierre, what was out, is in again. There are a lot of people making tischbahns, in the style of those old Maerklin layouts, so that they can run their vintage equipment. I have a couple of the old layout books and I would like to make a small vintage layout.

Excellent - but weird, first time the link was dead, when I posted my reply, it came 'alive' but would not play, just tried it again and away it went.

I suspect the link in the first message went funny because it was such an old thread and may have been truncated until reactivated.

No matter, seen it now, all good.

Greetings,
Does anybody have the track plans for the layout pictured in the first picture posted by Welten?

I ask because that is exactly the type of layout that I want to build this holiday season for my son! I have most of the layout books, so just book title and page would help me out greatly. All that is really missing is a mountain tunnel, but I can just drop that in anywhere it fits.

My problem is that I have some many 'ideas' and wants that the structure of a formal layout will help me focus and build instead of 'imagine' and get frustrated.

Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,

This is what you're after - as a display layout it was sold as item 0401.

It is also in the track-plan book 0351 from 1972 Pages 34 & 35 - I've pasted a copy of the layout from the display layout catalogue, plus a photo from the track-plan book and the actual track plan itself.

It would give you some interesting running for sure. You'll have a bit of a search to find all the metal bridge sections, (in good condition) but some other list members may be able to help.

If you are doing it in M track then it's all laid out for you, otherwise you'll need to do some planning if planning on using C or K.

With my interest in factory layouts I've now also found a new interest in the track plan books because many of the display layouts are in the books - I have only one but there's been quite a few variations over the years so I'm going to have to start trying to fill the gaps I don;t have - if anyone has any spares, I'd be interested (M & K track).

Hope this helps.
