I really wasn't going to buy this one, but Rowan took the trouble to show me and I am glad he did as the girls really liked it as soon as they saw it on eBay.

It looks like the doors close when the loco pushes the buffer (not shown) inside the rear of the roundhouse. The doors seem to open when the loco pushes against the door. The problem with the later theory is that there are no marks on the inside of the doors where you would think that 40 years of loco pushing would have left the mark..

I suspect that this one is 7028.2 as it did not come with interior lights, but it does seem to have holders for a light on each side.

Miss 9 and I are going to find a spot for it on the layout and use one of the triple turnouts (we don't have a turntable) to direct the loco into a vacant shed. It should be able to find some spare m-track for inside the shed.. wink

Anyway, as expected, it came without a box or manual. The box I don't really care about, but I would really like a copy of the manual if that is possible as I am having trouble understanding the door operation.

We've had one or two of these roundhouses for sale through our club. I could ask around to see if anyone knows the answer. In fact one of our members has one (check out the piccies of the large M Track layout I posted), so I've sent an email off to him.

Thanks David.. I really appreciate this.. Even if a copy of the manual is not possible, it would be nice to know how the doors are supposed to work and what the light fittings looked like..

From memory there was no manual.

Loco's open and close the doors by pushing the appropriate bits.

s for lights, they were Marklin building lighs I think that slotted into the top of the shed. You could use faller lights of just sring some light bulbs over each of the tracks and get the same if not a better effect.

Had a look through the old catalogues, 1960 through 1969, there's no instructions there!

Thanks... I am trying to work out how to get the loco to stop in the shed AND push the buffer back far enough to shut the door.. I am still considering a Switch pilot extension with servos to move the buffer at the back triggered by the loco passing over contacts... Problem is that I don't want the doors to close too soon...

I will try some Brawa lights to see how they go..

Thanks for looking.. Koll says this shed, version 2, was made in 1963.. Version 1 with the lights was 1950 - 1961, while the brown coloured version three was made in 1964-1975..

Hi Adrian,

I have a 7288 (plastic made) locomotive shed and I think the doors open by means of the springs near the doors (the part on the shaft with a "L" shape: I am not able to describe them, but you can see on your pictures).
So when the locomotive leaves the buffer inside the rear of the roundhouse, the mechanism open the doors, without any pressure on the doors by the locomotive buffers.
I hope this could help you.

Bye

Renato

Hi,
I used to have one of these roundhouses. They are massive and need a big layout to not look out of place. As you say,as the engine hits the buffers the doors close and the engine pushes the doors open. It works very well, just don't enter the roudhouse to fast or you may get a fiddly derailment.
regards

I got a reply back from my contact, who confirms what others have said:

"The 7028 round house has automatic doors when the loco goes in the roundhouse it hits the bracket at the back and the doors close. The doors open when the locomotive hits the door and they spring open, the whole system is manual and should work like clockwork!"

Hi Stefano,

the two outer chimneys are the screws which hold the roof.

" Why doesn't the engine scratch the inside of the door??"

never thought about it! But it is really of no importance. As long as you go out of the roundhouse reasonably slowly it all works really well. You do need m track of course and you can install catenary as well. If you have a big enough layout you should have the roundhouse directly connected to the Marklin Turntable. Great fun.

As soon as the bumpers hit the inside of the doors, the spring automatically opens them, avoiding the scratching of the doors.

My thoughts
