Hi all,

I need to remove the screws that hold the coupling rods of a steamloco in to place. I seem to remember M has/had a special toolset with very small wrenches or something to remove those small screws. Is this correct and what # is it. I searched the M website without luck.

The steamloco I'm talking about has the small steam distribution control rods in the wrong position. It seems the axle that holds the coupling rods mounted on the wheel with the big counterweight is turned 90 degr too far. Can I do something about it? The coupling rods look somewhat funny now and touch the body in turns.

I would post a picture if I could but the loco is packed away again for my birthday next tuesday. It is a 3701 BR53, 2nd hand from ebay.

Well, I got myself a set of cheap "precision wrenches" from a "variety store for real men" that has tools, electronics, computers, coffe makers, airguns, tents and so on... I think it was the 4,5mm in that set that was the right one... About 2 Euros for the complete set...

90 degrees quartering between left & right side is normal, if you have 180 degrees - it would indeed look stupid...

Bert,

Wiha Tools makes some nice metric screw drivers and hex nut wrench sets that are also reasonably priced. I bought myself some and they have come in really useful for removing gear-rod assemblies especially when you have to replace traction tires. I bought myself sizes that range from 0.5 mm to 4.5 mm.

Thanks all for the replies. I will search a local hardware store first for a cheap set, else I will buy the more expensive Marklin branded set.

Märklin has the 70900 toolset, with nut drivers, phillips and flat blade screwdrivers, etc.

It isnt really that noticable if you don't know it, but the problem is that due to the BR53 Mallet construction a moving part of the coupling rods can touch the firebox in tight corners (like my R1s). So I would like to adjust it.

My local M dealer has the toolbox in stock (13 euros) so I will pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks for the pictures.

I only need the hexagonal screwdrivers as I have plenty of tweezers and normal screwdrivers. But this is the easiest way to get them I guess.

With this set I can remove the nut that holds the main driving rods and the wheel coupling rods of my steamlocos (usually on the 3th wheel). Is it also possible to turn the axle from which the nut removed? It is this one that is turned somewhat causing my problems. (Nothing left/right as Juhan was suggesting) . The described issue is only happening on one of the 4 coupling rod assemblys.

If I take the exploded view diagram from another BR53 the axle for the rods on the 3th wheel seems fixed, while I need it to be turned for about 60 degrees. Any ideas?

I hope this sheds more light on the issue.

You can buy sets of nut drivers/spinners from plenty of places, they'll be cheaper than Marklin and just as good for the purpose. Try a decent hardware store.

Too late, I got my set Smile Will be usefull anyway. The dealer told me there was one specific screwdriver in there that was very hard to find through regular hardware stores.

It didn't solve my problem though. The same dealer said they have an own repair service (a very skillfull customer) where I can send my loco to, so I might try that.
